In Florida, storms don't ask permission.

They form quietly beyond the horizon, pulling energy from places unseen until one day the sky darkens, the wind shifts, and the landscape is never quite the same again.

For ten seasons, ensembleNewSRQ has been a storm of its own making.

Over the past decade, ensembleNewSRQ has brought the work of 148 composers to Sarasota, creating a space where contemporary music is encountered not as an academic exercise, but as a living conversation between artists, performers, and audiences.

A week ago, this was an invitation.

Today, it's a thank you.

What happened on May 22 at the Sarasota Opera House exceeded anything we could have imagined. Hundreds of people joined us for Music for New Bodies, helping bring one of the most ambitious productions in ensembleNewSRQ's history to life.

We're still processing it all.

The music. The poetry. The projections. The conversations afterward. The feeling in the room when the last note faded away and we sat together in silence, reverent before what we had just experienced—until the world came rushing back and the applause erupted.

The good news? We captured it.

Our team has been editing like mad, and over the coming weeks we'll be sharing behind-the-scenes footage, artist interviews, rehearsal moments, photographs, and performance excerpts from this extraordinary collaboration between Matthew Aucoin, Peter Sellars, Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota, and ensembleNewSRQ.

If you were there, thank you for being part of it.

If you weren't, stay tuned.

We've got a lot to share.

MacArthur Fellow Matthew Aucoin is one of the most compelling voices shaping the future of opera today.

Composer, conductor, and co-artistic director of the American Modern Opera Company, Aucoin’s work has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Salzburg Landestheater, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, and major stages around the world.

On May 22, ensembleNewSRQ presents the Sarasota premiere of Music for New Bodies—Aucoin’s visionary vocal symphony created in collaboration with internationally acclaimed director Peter Sellars.

Part operatic meditation, part immersive staged work, the performance confronts urgent questions about humanity, technology, and our shifting relationship with the natural world.
