When Words Fail

Charles Wuorinen describes how he achieved “equality” in his Percussion Duo.

“My PERCUSSION DUO was a joint commission from Steven Schick and James Avery, both then of the University of Iowa. These artists gave the first performance on 20 October 1979 at the University.
The work is in an unproblematic single movement, and for most of its length, it treats the two members of the duet as a single sonority. The percussion (vibraphone and marimba only) compensates by having two timbres at its disposal for the fact that its range cannot match that of the more expansive piano. But through this device, real equality between the two players is achieved.”

Season 11 begins in 9 Days! October 5th with...

Roomful of Teeth

To open Season 11, ensembleNEWSRQ joins forces with the renowned vocal band Roomful of Teeth for a boundary-pushing program of vocal and instrumental works by Leilehua Lanzilotti, Peter Shin, Wally Gunn, and Pulitzer Prize Winning composer Caroline Shaw. Exploring the expressive possibilities of the human voice in contemporary chamber music, this program reflects on the space between certainty and possibility in a world that is constantly shifting.

More than 100 works have been written for these voices.

Founded in 2009 at MASS MoCA, Roomful of Teeth has spent more than fifteen years exploring what the human voice can do—and giving composers a reason to write things for it that hadn’t existed before.

The group works with a continuously expanding vocabulary of singing techniques, collaborating with composers and artists including Julia Wolfe, David Lang, Missy Mazzoli, Terry Riley, Gabriel Kahane, Leilehua Lanzilotti, Peter S. Shin and Caroline Shaw.

The results have traveled far beyond the rehearsal room.

Roomful of Teeth has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Paris Philharmonie, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Walt Disney Concert Hall and The Barbican, and with orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic and BBC Symphony.

Their recordings have earned two GRAMMY Awards for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. Caroline Shaw's Partita for 8 Voices, featured on their first album, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music.

You've heard their voices in places you might not expect, too: Netflix's Dark, Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, Beyoncé's Homecoming, Catherine Called Birdy, and Ken Burns' Leonardo da Vinci.

On October 5, you can hear them in Sarasota.

Lucy Fitz Gibbon returns to ensembleNEWSRQ.

On January 18, soprano Lucy Fitz Gibbon joins enSRQ for György Kurtág’s Messages of the Late Miss R. V. Troussova, Op. 17—a landmark work for soprano and chamber ensemble, composed between 1976 and 1980.

Twenty-one brief movements. Three parts. Poems by Rimma Dalos moving through loneliness, desire, bitterness, delight and grief.

When Messages premiered in Paris in 1981 with Pierre Boulez’s Ensemble intercontemporain, it brought the then 55-year-old Kurtág to international attention. Nearly half a century later, we return to the work in the year of the composer’s 100th birthday.
