As No Margin, No Mission marks 15 years of helping nonprofits build stronger, more thrivable futures, we’re celebrating 52 organizations whose earned income journeys demonstrate what’s possible when mission and entrepreneurship come together. This week, we’re highlighting Selah Freedomand its earned income venture, Selah Consulting.
Selah Freedom is dedicated to ending s*x trafficking and bringing freedom to the exploited through awareness, prevention, outreach, and residential programs. In 2022, the organization participated in The Patterson Foundation’s Margin & Mission Ignition Learning Labs, bringing leadership, board, and staff together to explore how earned income could generate unrestricted revenue while extending the organization’s expertise and impact.
Throughout the Lab series, the Selah Freedom team explored a range of earned income possibilities, then used the MMI vetting process to assess their market potential, mission alignment, feasibility, and organizational fit. That disciplined exploration helped the team narrow its options and identify the most viable opportunity to pursue: Selah Consulting, a mission-aligned venture that provides training and consulting services to help organizations and communities better understand, prevent, and respond to human trafficking.
With a viable business opportunity identified and organizational alignment across Leadership, Willingness, Readiness, Capacity, and Culture (LWRCC), Selah Freedom advanced to MMI’s intensive consulting phase. Working with No Margin, No Mission, the team developed a comprehensive business plan, secured startup capital, implemented the venture, and tracked its performance over time.
Since inception, Selah Consulting has generated nearly $150,000 in earned revenue — but the value of Selah Freedom’s MMI participation reaches well beyond the bottom line. Ripple effects have included expanding the organization’s reach, bringing its expertise to new audiences and customers, strengthening its entrepreneurial capacity, increasing visibility and awareness, and creating another platform for advancing its mission. The venture has also provided a new source of unrestricted revenue to help support Selah Freedom’s broader work.
Selah Freedom’s journey demonstrates why the work of exploring and vetting possibilities matters. The goal isn’t simply to find an idea that can generate revenue — it’s to identify the right opportunity at the intersection of market demand, organizational capacity, and mission impact, and then build it into a venture that can deliver all three.
