Currently based in Sarasota, Florida, Upward Notes creates shared musical experiences in shelters, assisted living homes, animal rescues, and more. Our performances support both audience and artist menta

l health, grounded in empathy, connection, and presence. We’re a volunteer-powered, nonprofit organization committed to using music as a tool for transformation, well-being, and joy.

Inspiration.

Connection.

Possibility.

Every gathering leaves something behind.

For some, it's hearing live classical music for the very first time.

For others, it's feeling seen, included, or simply wondering what's possible.

When someone asks,

"When are you coming back?"

or

"How do we find more online?"

we know the gathering carried on beyond the final note.

That's the kind of accomplishment we're working toward.

Together, we create something that belongs to all of us.

They connect us to our elders, our contemporaries to new friends, musicians to listeners, and community partners to one another.

Over time, these moments become something more than music.

They become trust.

They become belonging.

They become community.

That's the quiet work of gathering.

P.E.R.M.A. – E is for Engagement. 🎶

Engagement is what happens when we give our full attention to the moment we're sharing.

At Upward Notes, our community begins with babies and stretches to our elders. It includes our contemporaries, neighbors in recovery, those who are incarcerated or infirmed, children discovering music for the first time, and even the shelter animals who have gathered with us.

For one hour, we become part of the same experience.

Someone listens quietly.
Someone sings.
Someone reaches for an instrument.
Someone smiles at a stranger.

No two gatherings look the same, but each one reminds us that when we are fully present with one another, we begin to build something that lasts.

That's the kind of engagement we hope to create—one gathering at a time.

On what would have been Anthony Bourdain’s birthday, we’re taking a moment to reflect.

Bourdain taught us that sharing a meal could build understanding across cultures. We believe music can do something similar—bringing people together, one gathering at a time.

His life also reminds us of something deeply important: mental well-being matters. It shapes how we connect with one another, how we experience joy, and how we move through the world.

At Upward Notes, we believe there are many pathways to well-being. Through music, belonging, participation, and shared experiences, we hope to create moments that help people feel seen, connected, and supported.

This summer, we'll continue exploring those ideas through the PERMA framework—one gathering at a time.

A heartfelt thank you to Women in Philanthropy Sarasota for hosting such a special gathering.

We're also grateful to Community Foundation, The Jewish Federation of Sarasota, and Gulf Coast Community Foundation for bringing together so many people who believe in the power of community and connection.

At Upward Notes, we're spending this summer building next season, and we couldn't be more excited about what's ahead. We look forward to creating new opportunities to gather, grow, and share music together.

This evening felt like the beginning of something wonderful.
