"Hit the Lake, Not the V**e. You'll Get More Air." That message, created with input from 276 local students, is one way Essex County is fighting back against ni****ne industry tactics aimed at young people. Learn more about the TURN coalition's prevention work this World No To***co Day.

ELIZABETHTOWN | In recognition of World No To***co Day on Sunday, May 31, the Essex County Health Department (ECHD) is highlighting ongoing regional efforts through TURN to address tactics used by the to***co and ni****ne industry to make products more appealing to young people.

Today is World No To***co Day. This year's theme is "Unmasking the Appeal," and it's a message worth sitting with.

Flashy screens. Fruity flavors. Sleek designs. These products aren't built to help people quit. They're built to get the next generation hooked.

Since January, C-Turn CFE has collected 363 v**e devices across Clinton, Franklin, and Essex counties. More than half were confiscated in schools. Not one was a legal flavor to sell in New York State.

The marketing is designed to appeal. So is the addiction. Talk to the young people in your life. If you or someone you know wants help quitting, the New York State Quitline is here: 1-866-NY-QUITS (1-866-697-8487).

This ***coDay, we’re joining to***co control advocates around the world in exposing the tactics to***co companies use to attract young people.

Candy flavors. Sleek product design. Sports and music sponsorships. Influencer campaigns.

The to***co industry continually introduces new products and markets them in ways that attract young people and adults who don’t smoke.

Franklin County schools showed up big for Every Kid Healthy Week. Students at Brushton-Moira went on a school-wide walk, Tupper Lake hosted a wellness fair, and Salmon River got kids trying new healthy foods with a Tasty Tuesday taste test. When schools make health and wellness part of the day, students notice β€” and so do families. Read more about what these districts did and how your school can get involved.
