One Meal
Mike McKinley is founder and coordinator of One Meal, a non-profit, street-level ministry that operates a food line for the homeless, the working poor and the hungry in downtown Mobile. Mike and his family and volunteers began this outreach on 2009.
One Meal is based on what McKinley calls an “open-door policy” that provides for anyone or any group who feels a call to help an avenue for their kindness and generosity. The open door extends to the receivers, as well as to the givers, following one guide only, that “If you are hungry, get in line,”
Sometimes, the main course is just peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Sometimes, it’s a stew made with venison donated by a hunter. Always, the McKinley family — Mike; his wife, Lori; and their two daughters, Marina and Michaela — along with a few volunteers, show up at 108 Dearborn Street on Sunday afternoons at 4 to dispense an average of 150-200 meals to those who are hungry.
It all started when McKinley and Marina, then 13, were helping out at a gumbo cook-off fundraiser in Bienville Square downtown. At the end of the event, the homeless showed up asking for anything left over — food, paper products, eating utensils.
