New Press / Nueva Prensa

New Press / Nueva Prensa "Occupied Press North Bay/Prensa Ocupada Bahia del Norte" has become the "New Press North Bay/Nueva Prensa Bahia del Norte." That is the task we’re taking on.

Born in the Occupy movement, we are a bi-lingual alternative to corporate media in the North Bay. Along with other independent community media–print, internet, and broadcast--we intend to become the truly mainstream source of news and culture of, by, and for the 99 percent.

The Occupy rose as the voice of the dispossessed–the people who have lost their jobs, their homes, their health care, their schools, their savings–their very future–to the corporate juggernaut. As we attempt to break that juggernaut’s
To take back our country, we must be able to report, analyze, and discuss what is happening to us and what to do about it. But what masquerades as the “mainstream” media--controlled by big corporations and big money–cannot and will not do this. We understand the necessity of thinking globally and acting locally. Consequently, we are focusing on reporting North Bay events and conditions in ways that illustrate their part in larger developments which, more often than not, lead directly to the machinations of the 1 percent. We have pledged to be 100-percent bi-lingual. To be anything less would perpetuate the divisiveness inherent in the English-only corporate press. Our various North Bay cultures sometimes face the dominant 1 percent differently, but we face it together. We much appreciate the various alternative voices throughout the North Bay, and we will be linking our readers to their stories when they complement or deepen what we publish. We know that journalists in the corporate media work under duress, and we encourage them to bring us the stories–and the views–they cannot get into print. Being on the web is not enough to make the voice of the 99 percent heard widely and loudly. We need a print edition for those who can’t afford the internet, for activists to put in the hands of the people they talk to–and to forcefully go up against the corporate media. If you are part of the 99 percent, the OP/PO is for you. We encourage your support and participation. In fact, we very much need your support and participation. Without it, the North Bay will not have the strong, independent voice that we all need. Here’s how you can help:
– Reporters and Editors: We need people to report the news of their communities. We need skilled editors to help them craft their stories.– Researchers and Commentators: We need people who know–or can research–the deep backstory behind news events.– Photographers: We need anyone and everyone to document the events, lives, cultures, and environment of the North Bay.– Supporters and Fund Raisers: We need people who can donate and others to raise money by organizing events, writing grants, or cultivating their deep-pocket friends.

Kshama Sawant coming to Sonoma County! Put her on your calendar!

I am organizing the Sonoma County leg of a Bay Area tour by Kshama Sawant, labor activist, socialist, and former Seattle City Council member, whose work got Seattle the highest minimum wage in the country. She will be accompanied by Jeff Mackler, Bay Area socialist, who has worked on many fronts including on freedom for Mumia Abu Jamal, Julian Assange, and Lynne Stewart and was a union activist for the American Federation of Teachers.

This will be an educational gathering on socialism and how socialists can work together for change.

The date is Saturday, March 21, 1:00 to 3:00 pm at The Arlene Francis Center, 99 6th St., Santa Rosa. More details to come.
