VFTA is a 501c3, non-profit charitable foundation which is devoted to creating respect and empathy for animals through education, rescue, legislation, and advocacy. VFTA has many programs that focus on animal welfare, including an Animal Assistance Hotline, Working Cats, Helping Friends, Abuse Prevention, Humane Education, Feral Colonies, VFTA Worldwide, Animal Films Program, and an Elephants in Captivity Awareness Campaign.

For nearly a week, Pop Tart dragged fishing gear through the sea.

Every breath took effort. Every mile carried risk.

Now, the beloved Salish Sea humpback whale is swimming free after a cross-border response involving whale-watching crews and Canada’s marine mammal rescue team. Their persistence helped turn a life-threatening entanglement into a second chance.

Her freedom deserves celebration. Her ordeal demands action.

Fishing gear entanglement injures and kills whales far too often. Prevention, rapid reporting, safer equipment, and coordinated rescue efforts save lives.

Extinction does not wait for paperwork.

The U.S. Interior Department has ended automatic federal protections for species newly listed as threatened. Each species will now need its own protection plan, a process critics warn could delay action while habitat loss, drilling, mining and development continue. Monarch butterflies, alligator snapping turtles and dozens of other species awaiting protection could face greater risk.

Once a species disappears, no policy reversal brings it back.

For nearly 40 years, Julie lived under the control of a circus.

Now, she gets to choose.

Portugal’s last circus elephant has become the first resident of the Pangea Elephant Sanctuary in Alentejo. She is roaming her new surroundings, deciding how to spend her days and enjoying something long denied to her. A mud bath.

Julie’s freedom came late. It still matters.

Her story proves animal protection laws need safe sanctuaries behind them. Ending exploitation is only the first step. Every rescued animal needs somewhere to heal.

Milan Fashion Week’s governing body is urging designers to remove real fur from runway collections starting in September 2026. It will also stop promoting fur products through its official channels. The guidance remains voluntary, so animals still need fashion houses to choose compassion.

This marks progress. It is not the finish line.

For generations, horse-drawn carriages have been sold as part of New York’s charm.

For the horses, the reality means traffic, noise, extreme weather, pavement, and the constant risk of a frightened animal colliding with a modern city.

Now New York faces a defining choice. Romanch’s Law would phase out the carriage industry after 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan died following a carriage accident in Central Park. The proposal has gained support from animal advocates, public-safety groups, city leaders, and Romanch’s grieving family. Carriage drivers and their union warn it will eliminate livelihoods.

Tradition should never outweigh safety or suffering.

Former “Baywatch” star and longtime animal advocate Alexandra Paul says she joined more than 50 activists at a Wisconsin facility breeding dogs for scientific research. Authorities allege members of the group entered the property and removed beagles. Some dogs were recovered. Others were not.

Her case raises a difficult question.
