SWAIA joins the broader Native arts and cultural community in mourning the loss of Susan Feller, founding President and CEO of the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM). Susan devoted her life to strengthening Tribal archives, libraries, museums, and cultural institutions — creating pathways for Indigenous communities to protect, celebrate, and share their heritage for generations to come.

As the founder of ATALM, she built a nationally recognized organization that provided support, resources, training, and collaboration opportunities for professionals working in Indigenous cultural institutions across the country and beyond. Her work spanned decades and touched every corner of Indian Country. From directing the Going Home Project to help Native communities reclaim non-NAGPRA items, to leading language revitalization efforts and building digital access in Native communities, to advising government agencies and Congressional members on matters relating to Indigenous cultural institutions — Susan showed up, again and again, for community.

She was known not only for her extraordinary professional achievements, but for her warmth, her generosity, and her genuine belief in the power of Indigenous culture and community to carry us all forward. The field of Indigenous arts and cultural preservation is immeasurably stronger because of Susan Feller. We are deeply saddened by her loss and hold her family, her colleagues at and all the communities she served with great care in our hearts today. May her legacy continue to inspire. 🙏

SWAIA is proud to share news of an extraordinary event coming to Santa Fe — and one that feels very close to our own heart. The Indigenous Foodways Festival arrives at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture on Saturday, June 20th from 10 AM to 6 PM. A full day dedicated to honoring and preserving Native American culture and traditions through food, connecting land, food, and community. A Best of Show Ceremony & Luncheon ticket puts you in the room as those awards are announced — witnessing the moment Native artists are recognized at the highest level of excellence or a General Preview to preview the art and engage with the artists before the plaza opens on Saturday.

Wild plums. Braised buffalo short ribs. Roasted acorn squash. Cactus crème brûlée. We are still dreaming about the food! 🌵🍽️✨

Chef Ray Naranjo (Santa Clara Pueblo) brought something truly unforgettable to the table at A Taste of Native Fashion — and our community is still talking about every single course.

Roasted wild plums that excited our tastebuds. Braised buffalo short ribs slow-braised to perfection. Acorn squash with the warmth of the Southwest in every bite. And a cactus crème brûlée that closed the evening on a note as unexpected and beautiful as the runway itself.

This is Indigenous foodways honored, elevated, and shared in community. Chef Ray is a leading force in the revitalization of Native cuisine — blending ancestral knowledge rooted in the Ancient Puebloans of the Southwest and the Three Fire Tribes of the Great Lakes with bold, contemporary culinary innovation. Every dish he creates carries a rich cultural lineage and a deep connection to the land and people behind it.
