New Mexico remains one of the few states with no absolute minimum marriage age; minors aged 16 and 17 can marry with parental consent, and those under 16 can marry with a judge's approval. A past attempt to close this loophole, House Bill 242, successfully cleared committees but ultimately died without becoming law. Join Zonta and let's fix this! The 2024 child marriage ban legislation, House Bill 242, was sponsored by two Democratic lawmakers:Representative Doreen Y. Gallegos (D - Doña Ana, District 52)Senator Daniel A. Ivey-Soto (D - Bernalillo, District 15)

Why the Sponsorship Matters for Your ProposalAs you plan to pitch a new version of this bill, these two lawmakers are your best starting points because they already did the heavy lifting to draft the original framework. Doreen Gallegos serves as a prominent leader in the House. If she is still supportive, she has the institutional knowledge to reintroduce the bill in the House chamber. Daniel Ivey-Soto is a veteran legislator who frequently works on technical updates to state statutes and county clerk regulations.

Zonta International responds to U.S. withdrawal from multilateral institutions

Zonta International expresses its concern and disappointment in the decision by the Government of the United States to withdraw from, or disengage with, a number of key international organizations, conventions and treaties established under the auspices of the United Nations and the broader multilateral system.

Gender equality and inclusion is not optional. It is fundamental to justice, security and sustainable progress. We call on global leaders to uphold their international commitments and strengthen—rather than retreat from—the multilateral institutions that safeguard our shared future.
