JAMPilgrimages The guiding principle for our work is drawn from the art of Kintsugi.

As a community, we have been fractured, pieces scattered across the US, but by collecting those pieces and remaking them into a cohesive community, we will become whole again.

The Redman-Hirahara House in Watsonville, California was purchased by the Hirahara family in 1937. The older members of the family who emigrated from Japan were barred from citizenship and land ownership, but not the second generation, who were born on American soil. During World War Two, the Hirahara family were forced from their home and eventually incarcerated at Jerome and Rohwer in Arkansas. A local Watsonville attorney, John McCarthy, looked after the property on behalf of the family. This meant they were able to return after the war, unlike many Japanese Americans who lost everything. To help those less fortunate, the Hirahara family opened up their farmstead to displaced members of their community, providing them with jobs and a place to live. Over the last 40 years after the Hirahara family moved out, the house has slowly deteriorated. In August, Santa Cruz County officials voted to delist the site from the county's historic resource inventory. This is the first step in removing the site from the National Register of Historic Places and paving the way for its eventual demolition.

The Redman-Hirahara House and the land around it hold so many important stories - from our architectural and agricultural heritage to examples of citizenship, community, and resilience. Before the house and its stories are lost, Japanese American Memorial Pilgrimages is working to create a documentary film that ensures this house and its lessons continue to be preserved for future generations. Please consider donating to support the creation of this film.

⏲️ Educators - don’t miss out on this deeply meaningful learning experience!

If you would like to join the Japanese American Museum of Oregon at the Tule Lake Pilgrimage for the Teacher Workshop this year, be sure to get your applications in by MAY 1 here: https://jamo.org/tule-lake-workshop/

The annual pilgrimage at the site of the Tule Lake concentration camp is a gathering of incarceration survivors, their descendants, and allies to honor the experience of Japanese Americans through educational sessions, tours, and community building. Participants in the Teachers Workshop will hear from Japanese American community members, scholars, and local educators about the forced removal and incarceration of over 125,000 Japanese Americans from the West Coast during World War II.

A group of 8 educators (K-12) will be selected to participate in the Teacher Workshop. If selected, you will spend 3 days in Portland and 3 days at the Tule Lake Pilgrimage. Transportation to and from the Pilgrimage is provided, and a $500 stipend is offered to help offset any additional costs. Priority is given to Oregon educators, but educators from other states are also welcome to apply.

Japanese American Memorial Pilgrimages Transitions to All-Volunteer Organization

Founding staff members Kimiko Marr and Nicole Tanner conclude their paid roles as JAMP moves into its next chapter

SANTA CRUZ, CA — Japanese American Memorial Pilgrimages (JAMP), a nonprofit dedicated to education, remembrance, and community building around Japanese American history, today announced a transition to an all-volunteer organizational model, effective May 1, 2026. As part of this change, Executive Director Kimiko Marr and Nicole Tanner will conclude their paid staff roles with the organization.

The transition marks the end of an era for an organization with roots stretching back to 2016, when Marr and co-founder Marissa Fujimoto began recording oral histories at pilgrimages to Japanese American incarceration sites. What started as a grassroots documentation effort grew, over nearly a decade, into a nationally recognized virtual community connecting Japanese Americans across generations and geographies — formally incorporating as a nonprofit in 2023. Tanner's contributions were instrumental in shaping JAMP's operations throughout that journey.

"The high quality and wide range of work that JAMP does is a direct result of the knowledge and passion that Kimiko and Nicole have put into this organization," said Ian Martyn, Secretary of the JAMP Board of Directors. "They have built an incredible foundation upon which we can continue this important work. JAMP has led me — and so many others — to places of discovery about Japanese American identity and family history that would not have been possible without their dedication."

The move to an all-volunteer model comes after sustained efforts to secure ongoing funding fell short. "Traditional sources of support for JAMP's work, like grants, have not come through as we had hoped," said Amanda Roper, JAMP Treasurer. "This is a transition we make with a heavy heart — but also with deep gratitude for everything Kimiko and Nicole have built."

JAMP will continue its mission through a dedicated volunteer board and community of supporters, sustaining its programming, educational resources, and commemorative events. The organization remains committed to bridging generations and keeping Japanese American history, culture, and community vibrant and accessible.
