Thairie is a pillar of our community—steadfast in his commitment to making Santa Cruz, and the world, a better place for all. His kindness, compassion, leadership, and action know no bounds. He has always led with LOVE—for this community and for all people.
Thairie deserves to receive the love he has poured into the world a thousand times over. We stand with him in his recovery and honor his spirit and voice.

Please consider donating to his recovery fund—link in bio.

Black Health is also working to provide grief counseling for our community and compiling a list of mental health resources to share. If you are interested in joining or leading a session, or if you’d like to be included in our resource list, please reach out.

In community, we can.

We love you, Thairie.

Tomorrow, November 17th, we honor Ruby Bridges’ legacy and take powerful steps toward a brighter future—led by our youth.

Santa Cruz County Black Health Initiative (SCCBHI) is proud to join forces with the Santa Cruz High BSU to support and sponsor a walkout at Santa Cruz High. Sixty-one years after Ruby’s courageous steps, our youth are carrying forward the hard work of those who fought before them, standing up to systems of oppression and envisioning a world free from racism and discrimination.

This action comes at a pivotal moment, as our mission has been renewed with fierce commitment in the face of political and social change. A healthy, thriving community is one in which every member can flourish, and we are dedicated to the mental health and well-being of Black residents in Santa Cruz County. Through advocacy, collaboration, and shared resilience, we honor the strength of our ancestors and support the leadership of our youth as we push forward to build a more just and equitable future.

🚨 Calling all community spaces! The BHI Youth Ambassador Program is looking for a safe location to bring our mural project to life, created by our Black youth group to inspire other Black youth in our community to see themselves and feel uplifted by this work. This mural will reflect their stories, pride, and resilience. In light of recent hate crimes against the Black Lives Matter mural, we understand there may be hesitation. But we believe in the power of art to unite and uplift, and we’re hoping to find a supportive space where our students’ vision can thrive. If you know of a wall that can help us make this happen, let us know! 🎨✊🏾

What a LOVELY afternoon of joy, creativity, and connection spent with this crew of young women at our YA Sisterhood Paint & Sip event ☀️🥹♥️🫶🏾 BIG THANKS to for joining us and leasing the workshop. You’re an incredible artist - we were honored to have you.

This event was a vibrant gathering filled with laughter, delicious treats, and vital networking for our girls. In communities like Santa Cruz, events like these are vital for our students’ wellbeing. They offer a safe space where children see themselves reflected, feel valued, and build a supportive network, fostering belonging and combating isolation. Representation matters deeply; seeing role models and peers who look like them enhances confidence and self-esteem. The connections formed can lead to valuable mentorship and guidance for future endeavors, while developing a network of friends and allies provides vital emotional and social support.

Additionally, engaging in creative activities like painting is both enjoyable and encourages self-expression and personal growth. With yummy treats, fresh fruit, good music, and sunshine, the experience becomes beautifully rejuvenating.

We are so grateful for the chance to bring this wonderful group together and look forward to many more opportunities for connection! 💕✨
