📣 CALL TO ACTION 📣– California Dental Hygienists

CDHA is requesting member action on AB 1952, which would create a pathway for internationally trained dentists (non-U.S. accredited) to become licensed dental hygienists in California, with program costs potentially paid through hygienist licensing fees.

Members are being asked to call and OPPOSE the bill.

This is WRONG. Any cost should be paid for by dentists and the Dental Board – not hygienists.
Please ask Assembly Member (state their name) to OPPOSE AB 1954.

Message from your local Trustee, Shannon Lewis:

CDHA HOD 2025 🦷✨
One of the biggest topics this year was the growing coalition of advocacy groups pushing to introduce dental therapists in California. What many don’t realize is that California already has a strong RDH/RDHAP structure and the only independent Dental Hygiene Board in the country.

CDHA’s goal is to collaborate and ensure any new model supports access to care without lowering RDH standards or creating a provider that bypasses hygienists.

This meeting really reminded me how much California hygienists have because past leaders fought for us—local anesthesia, RDHAP licensure, and the ability to practice with more autonomy than almost anywhere else. All of it happened through legislation and strong advocacy.

If dental therapy moves forward without collaboration from CDHA and DHBC, we risk:
• A scope created outside our profession
• Lower training standards
• RDHs being bypassed rather than integrated
• Oversight shifting away from DHBC
• Losing our voice in shaping the future

A heartfelt thank you to Cathy Draper for guiding us through the California dental practice act and infection control update class today — with clarity and humor! It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and to welcome new ones into our little dental hygiene community.

We truly have something special here — a group that shows up, supports one another, and continues to grow together.
