I’m not a part of the SBC, but I Am a Woman in Ministry… and this mindset isn’t just held by the SBC.
Women have spent decades trying to overcome the stigma of Eve’s offering in the Garden of Eden, and in the same breath, men have spent centuries trying to diminish and nullify Adam’s acceptance of it.
For years, women have carried the blame for the couple’s exile from the Garden. It is a misdirected blame that has transcended time, been passed down through generations, and in some cases has been shaped into warped doctrinal beliefs.
Just as Adam pointed the accuser’s finger at Eve then, some men still point the accuser’s finger at women today.
As a woman who has spent over twelve years in ministry and sixteen years in military leadership, I am no stranger to being at the directed end of the accuser’s finger. I have been accused of being too outspoken. I have been accused of being passive-aggressive. I have even been told that I am too curvy, too pretty and somehow that is a disqualification for the call of ministry.
Over the years, I have had to come to a difficult but freeing realization: the accuser’s finger pointed at me is rarely about me at all. More often, it reveals the insecurities, fears, and limitations of the one pointing it—an attempt to make them feel greater, safer, and more in control within the small, confined space they have been allowed to occupy.
The accusations are meant to silence, devalue, and push me into a place of dysfunction. Yet many times, they are nothing more than a response to the Kingdom impact of the calling, gifting, and anointing on my life.
I cannot, nor will not spend my energy trying to control someone’s narrow-minded perspective of me, nor can I spend my life trying to cage another person’s unchecked lust. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I am just not bound to listen to it, carry it, or allow it to shape who God has called me to be.
That’s not the Truth of the Call.
The Truth of the Call is to teach and preach Christ Jesus—His life, His death, and His resurrection. The Call is to pick up the cross of persecution and follow Christ. The Call is to run the race set before me with my eyes fixed forward, pressing toward the higher calling found in Christ Jesus, refusing to be distracted by what is beside me, behind me, or beneath me.
Because it is in Christ that I live, move, and have my being.
The accuser’s finger, and everything behind it was dealt with at the Cross.
My seal of approval to lead, teach, or shepherd within the Body of Christ does not rest in the minds of men. This is Kingdom business. It is bigger than man, greater than personal opinions, and far beyond human permission.
My calling was justified when my risen Savior conquered death, rose from the grave, and took His seat at the right hand of my Heavenly Father.
So, I will not spend my life defending what God has already affirmed. I will not be distracted by accusations, diminished by criticism, or delayed by the discomfort of others.
I will simply walk in the calling God has divinely orchestrated for my life, with my eyes fixed on Christ, continue the work Christ has entrusted to me, and stand boldly on the platform He built for me to freely preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
