Theatre runs deep in this family (including son, Chevelle).

🤍 For Beatrice, this performance is also a chance to share their own work in a space connected to the people who encouraged their creativity, individuality, and love of performance from the beginning.

Now, they're bringing that spirit to the stage in their own way as Black Benetar: bold, funny, vulnerable, and completely themself.

🫂 We’re grateful to celebrate this moment together and to welcome audiences into it with us.

How can Black Benetar vs. the Cistem be meaningful to you or your community? What is drag, really?

Beatrice Thomas, aka Black Benetar, answers these questions and more in today’s video!

We'd like our community to meet Black Benetar (Beatrice L. Thomas)- let's show them some Sandy Spring love!

"I am Black Benetar: a larger-than-life diva with a personality as big as my heart, equal parts Mae West, vaudeville star, and razor-sharp truth-teller.

I use drag, puppetry, magic, and theater to make people laugh, squirm, think, and occasionally wonder how we got here in the first place.

And while I serve plenty of camp, I also have something to say.

In Black Benetar vs. the Cistem, the healthcare system is put on trial for the ways it fails people seeking care for pain, dysfunction, and reproductive health concerns.

Far too many people with uteruses know the fear and frustration of being dismissed, misdiagnosed, undertreated, or simply not believed when something is wrong.

So naturally, I turned it into a court drama. ⚖️

This satirical show takes on a serious subject through drag, absurdity, theatrical spectacle, and humor, while making room for recognition, empathy, and maybe a little righteous fury.

We hope you’ll join us for Black Benetar vs. the Cistem!
