2026 KVSA Memorial Youth Pheasant Hunt - by Bob Bell

Kootenai Valley Sportsman Association is sponsoring the Third Annual KVSA Memorial Youth Pheasant Hunt in partnership with First Hunt Foundation and Idaho Department of Fish and Game. The hunt is to be held on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the Boundary-Smith Creek Wildlife Management Area. Open to youth between 12 - 17 years old, hunters will have a great opportunity to hunt with experienced dog handlers and mentors to learn more about pheasant hunting. There should be lots of birds on the WMA!

There is no cost to hunters, and sh****ns and ammo will be provided.

Hunters must have a valid Idaho Junior Hunting License or Passport. Upland Game Bird Permits are NOT required for hunters under 18. Read more at https://9b.news/2026/09/02/2026-kvsa-memorial-youth-pheasant-hunt/

In 1986, Oklahoma game warden Tracy Daniel came up with one of the strangest poaching stings you’ll ever hear about. He found a freshly killed 160-pound six-point buck along the road, froze it solid for eight days, used boards to hold the legs in a standing position, wired the ears upright, turned its head toward the road, and hauled the frozen deer about 100 yards into a pasture before daylight on opening morning. The first seven vehicles that came down the road tried to shoot it. This may have been the first case of wardens using decoys to catch poachers.

By the time the sting was over, 13 people had been busted. The last vehicle produced three men who jumped out and all started shooting. The funniest part is that after all those illegal shots, the poachers had only managed to hit the frozen deer twice. Later, a 14-year-old kid who was legally hunting the farm spotted the same deer, stalked it the right way and made the shot. The kid was apparently a better hunter than all the poachers combined.

Some of the comments heard in the Wildlife Building this week:

"This is my favorite building at the Fair."
"I remember coming here since I was a little kid."
"My granddaughters spent more time in this building than any other place tonight."
"What? Are there two raffle buckets? I better buy 6 more tickets!"
"There are two fish under the net."
"The Fair is not complete until I visit the Wildlife Building."
"Look at the p**p display!"
"Can adults play in the sandbox too?"
"Thank you!"

and many smiles were observed too.

Hello Sportsmen and supporters!

The Bonner County Fair is August 18 - 22 this year and the Bonner County Sportsmen will proudly showcase our Lehman Wildlife Education Center to the public. We get a lot of traffic - especially kids who come to see the wildlife displays and exhibits and the trout pond. And of course it takes volunteers to make this happen - and this is a great place to get involved! We need 2 folks per shift, 3 shifts per day for 5 days.

Volunteering is easy for this event, no special knowledge necessary and you can stand or sit as you wish. Greeting the public and answering any questions they have are the basic duties, and if you don’t know an answer you can call for help.

Thank you for your support.
