We got home from school/work, and tended to the animals. Tonight, this included saying goodbye to Rosalie. 🐓💔

Rosalie was found wandering the streets in Oakland with a broken foot, standing near the body of her flock mate who was hit by a car. We weren't sure she'd make it, because she was incredibly thin and in such poor shape.

But, she lived 2 happy years with us, and was one of the friendliest hens of our flock. We think she had a mass in her abdomen that was causing fluid accumulation, which is a common reproductive tract problem in laying hens.

Tonight, we're remembering the wonderful life she had with us, and celebrating that we're able to give a many animals a happy final chapter here. ❤️

Our feral cats are enclosed in about 1900 sq ft. While many feral cats are free roaming, our coyote and bobcat populations love roaming cats a little too much. So we keep our ferals enclosed, and they have a life of leisure.

Fred is an umbrella cockatoo, estimated to be about 30 years old.

His species is native to tropical rainforests, and they can live 20-60 years. They are known to be masters at opening cage latches and love to destroy wood, so we have Fred in an all-metal cage with the cage door padlocked.

They are also very smart birds; Fred knows how to dance when asked (and when he's in the mood for it 💃), and we've heard him imitate sounds around him such as:
Dogs barking
Hawks screeching
Chickens clucking
Goats bleating

He had a wonderful life with his previous owner, and lived on a ranch like ours where he could watch birds and wildlife. He has been with us for nearly a year, and has adapted well to his retirement home surrounding by the sounds of our animals.
