ETIAS is the new pre-travel authorization, similar to the U.S. ESTA. ETIAS is an online travel authorization you must get BEFORE your trip.
How it works
Fill out an online application
 Pay a small fee (~€20)
 Get approval (usually fast—minutes to a few days)
What you’ll provide
 Passport info
 Travel plans
 Basic background/security questions
Once you are approved
 ETIAS is valid for 3 years (or until passport expires)
 Allows for multiple trips of up to 90 days each
Important
ETIAS is NOT a visa. It’s a pre-screening system for visa-free travelers. It is required for Americans and most non-EU visitors starting late 2026. Think of ETIAS as “permission to board the plane.”

Though it isn’t an official holiday, meaning you won’t get time off work, March 17th is one of the most patriotic dates on the Italian calendar, as the country celebrates the Day of National Unity, Giornata dell’Unità Nazionale, recognising the day the Kingdom of Italy was officially founded in 1861.

Official ceremonies are held every year to mark the occasion, including the laying of a laurel wreath before Rome’s Altare della Patria monument by the president.
