Book Exchange of Marin

Book Exchange of Marin Connecting kids and teens with books in Marin County. We are an environmentally socially conscious alternative to the landfill for local schools and libraries.

We need children’s books of all kinds, so we of course welcome parents, kids and others who have children’s books to bring us. We work with Marin County youth, educators and service clubs to promote local and worldwide education and literacy. We find second homes for hundreds of thousands of wonderful, often like new, but no longer needed K-12 textbooks, library books and educational materials. We

offer books locally to families, teachers, schools and nonprofits, such as community literacy projects, daycare facilities, community centers, homeless shelters, hospitals, drug treatment facilities, prisons – and more. We collaborate with community-minded individuals and groups such as Rotary Clubs to ship our educational materials to developing countries around the globe. Our books have been distributed to students in over 40 countries! We are a fun and meaningful community-building service project that is run entirely by volunteers who are helping local schools and the environment, while educating children all over the world. Come visit us during our open hours. Everyone is welcome! The Global Book Exchange is the winner of the Marin Economic Commission Award of Excellence for “contributions to a vibrant and sustainable economy.”

"It's not real reading." 🙄

We've all heard it. But the research says otherwise.

Graphic novels build the same comprehension skills as prose — visual sequencing, vocabulary from context, inferencing. They lower the barrier for kids who find dense text intimidating, and studies consistently show they increase how often kids read, how long they read, and how willingly they pick up a book on their own.

Here in Marin, many elementary and middle school students from under-resourced communities are reading below grade level. A child who can't read proficiently by 3rd grade is 4x less likely to graduate on time — and when poverty is a factor, that jumps to 13x.

That's why the Book Exchange of Marin stocks graphic novels. Intentionally. Proudly. And why we need your help getting more of them into kids' hands. 📚

👉 $25 puts THREE graphic novels in the hands of a child who needs them.

720 amazing books just landed on our shelves — and we couldn't be more excited. 📚

Brennan O'Brien and William Saven from boys team charity organized a book drive at Kent Middle School and brought us 34 bags of books for the students and families we serve.

Youth-led drives like this one are special to us. The books young people collect from their own homes and friends are exactly what the Title 1 school students who visit The Book Exchange on literacy field trips are looking for. It's community taking care of community — and it works.

Thank you, Brennan, William, and everyone at boys team charity. We are so lucky to have partners like you. 💙

Marin County Supervisor Eric Lucan recently visited The Book Exchange of Marin with members of his team, and we were delighted to show them around. 📚✨

They toured the Book Exchange, watched our exciting new video in the Learning Lab, and spent time talking with many of our wonderful volunteers who help make our mission possible.

Pictured here: Diane Brandell, Co-Executive Director; Supervisor Lucan; President Bruce Burtch; and our newest volunteer, Stephanie Yatzeck.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to share how our community comes together to put books into the hands of children who need them most. ❤️📖

📚 Reading is Your SUPERPOWER! 📚

We're beyond excited to share a major milestone at the Book Exchange of Marin—our new Learning Lab is officially open! 🎉

What was once a crowded storage room has been completely transformed into a bright, welcoming space where students from local underserved communities can discover the joy of reading.

✨ THE TRANSFORMATION ✨
• Freshly painted walls in vibrant colors
• A stunning educational mural by talented local artist Andrea Flores (Nenasdiary.bigcartel.com)
• Brand-new children's tables and chairs
• A large interactive screen for engaging lessons

📖 THE PROGRAM 📖
This fall, we launched "Reading is Your Superpower"—a fun, interactive experience for students visiting us on field trips. Before choosing their 10 FREE books, students watch an inspiring video that showcases the incredible variety of books available: mysteries, adventures, graphic novels, biographies, fantasies, and more!

Then comes the fun part—an interactive game where students practice identifying different types of books and discover new genres they might never have considered. Our goal? To spark curiosity, build confidence, and show that reading truly can unlock new worlds.

💙 GRATITUDE 💙
A heartfelt THANK YOU to the Jolson Family Foundation for making this dream a reality! As Joe Jolson shared: "We were thrilled to have the opportunity to help establish the new Learning Lab at the Book Exchange. We hope everyone enjoys it for many years to come."

And a HUGE thank you to talented local artist and muralist Andrea Flores for the incredible mural! Check out her work at Nenasdiary.bigcartel.com

Check out the before and after photos —the transformation is incredible! This is what community partnership looks like. 🙌
