Marianne is the Senior Citizen Volunteer of the Year!

Dr. Marianne Reese, the Founder and Director of LifeLong Learning - San Marcos, has been selected to receive the 2026 San Marcos Community Senior Citizen Volunteer Award. An event to honor Marianne will be held in August and we will share those details with you as soon as they are available.

Marianne's nomination notes that she exemplifies the Award’s stated purpose to "recognize and honor a senior citizen whose volunteer efforts have made San Marcos a better place in which to live."
Since retiring from Texas State, Marianne helped create and lead the Retired Faculty & Staff Association (RFSA) and served as Chair of the City's Senior Citizen Advisory Board and the Price Center. Marianne began LifeLong Learning in 2014 as part of her work with RFSA and in 2017 created and financially supported LifeLong Learning as a stand-alone nonprofit.

For 12 years, Marianne has used her immense talents and skills -- and her love of learning -- to build an organization that has touched thousands of lives through stimulating and engaging courses, lectures, and other learning opportunities.

Marianne is a San Marcos treasure... and so deserving of this honor and recognition.

One of the oldest surviving structures in San Marcos is a simple log cabin with an incredible story.

The Merriman Cabin was built in 1846 by Dr. Eli T. Merriman, the area's first physician and one of the three men who later helped lay out the townsite of San Marcos. At the time it was constructed, it was only the second home in the settlement.

Built from hand-hewn logs, the cabin originally stood near what is now downtown San Marcos. Over the years it was relocated twice to ensure its preservation, eventually finding its current home at Veramendi Plaza near the river.

Today, the cabin is furnished with period pieces that help visitors imagine what life was like on the Texas frontier in the 1840s and 1850s. It's a remarkable reminder of just how far San Marcos has come since its earliest days.

BRITISH ENDOCRINOLOGIST DISCUSSES WEIGHT LOSS DRUGS AT ROTARY ON JULY 8
Dr. Mark Vanderpump is a London-based endocrinologist and former President of the British Thyroid Association. He will speak to the Rotary Club of San Marcos on Wednesday, July 8 at noon about obesity and modern advances in weight loss, including GLP-1 antagonists such as Ozempic. He says he hopes to demystify the “weight loss jabs” and explain how breakthrough medications are reshaping understanding of weight management.

“For decades, obesity was viewed through a simplistic lens of lifestyle choices, leaving people trapped in a cycle of failed diets and frustration,” Dr. Vanderpump says.

“A quiet revolution was brewing in the history of metabolic research. It began unexpectedly in the 1990s with the study of venomous Gila monster lizards, which led to the discovery of gut hormones that regulate blood sugar and appetite,” he said. That research led to GLP-1 medications like Ozempic.

“Rather than being a magic bullet,” he says, “GLP-1 agonists mimic signals to the brain that reduce appetite and increase satiety as well as optimizing insulin action. This has shifted the conversation from willpower to biology and led to significant public health benefits not just in obesity management but also treatment of type 2 diabetes.”

Rotary meets at the VFW Hall, 1701 Hunter Road. Visitors are always welcome at Rotary meetings. Rotary is a nonprofit, nonpolitical and nonreligious service organization. The San Marcos club is 105 years old.
