She’s been part of HRCC for 4 years, stepping into her board role because she believes HR shouldn’t operate in isolation — it sits at the center of people, business, education, and community.

David’s HR journey started in 1985 at Advanced Micro Devices, where he moved from purchasing into Human Resources — eventually writing the company’s affirmative action plan and spending 15 years in division HR.

He joined HRCC around 2002 and became Treasurer after a board president spotted his dual role as HR Manager and Controller at San Luis Paper Company. Perfect match! 📊

💬 “My entire life has been centered around connecting with others. This organization gave me the opportunity to connect with people who cared about others.”

Leadership style: Determined, caring, careful.

His advice for HR pros: “Monitor and adjust. Look for ways to improve. Make adjustments. Take a breath. We don’t always celebrate our wins.”

🏈 Fun fact: Now retired, David gives back at Atascadero High School — running the scoreboard since 2003 and currently coaching JV girls tennis.

We heard from the Cuesta College Career Center team, followed by Joseph Menapace, Partner at Hanna Brophy LLP, who gave us a practical breakdown of California’s Workers’ Compensation process — from injury reporting all the way through litigation.

Key takeaway: proactive claim management (fast reporting, thorough documentation, and offering modified work when possible) makes a real difference for both employees and employers. 💼

In HR, we are often the frontline for deep frustrations and tough emotions. Erin reminds us that while we must handle every situation with empathy, we have to protect our own peace—the friction isn’t about us, it’s just the nature of the crucial work we do.
