New Spotlight: Latinx Youth in Santa Clara County ✨

The “Spotlight on Latinx Youth” is a featured section of Kids in Common’s 2026 Children’s Data Book and draws on data from the Children’s Data Book alongside findings from the 2025 Latino Health Assessment (LHA). In support of the LHA, as well as the declaration of the Public Health Crisis for Latino Residents of Santa Clara County (SCC) determined on Sept 16, 2025, Kids in Common’s (KiC’s) 2026 Policy and Advocacy Agenda includes the prioritization of championing policies that specifically support SCC Latinx youth, as they represent a significant part of the youth population in SCC and also demonstrate some of the highest disparities in the County regarding basic needs, health, and education support.

The Latinx community makes up 25% of the total population in SCC, almost half of whom are youth under the age of 25 residing in South County and the East Side of San Jose. Among children, Latinx youth represent 28%, the second-largest ethnic group, which highlights the significant presence of Latinx youth in SCC and the need for targeted resources and support.

We invite advocates, educators, policymakers, and community members to explore the data and join us in advancing equity and wellbeing for Latinx youth across Santa Clara County.📊

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us at the 2026 Children’s Summit! On April 17th, Kids in Common’s 2026 Children’s Summit convened more than 250 cross‑sector leaders in Santa Clara County for a powerful day focused on youth leadership, vital data, and collective action, with strong participation from local government officials including County Supervisors and San José City Council.

Attendees were warmly welcomed by Kids in Common's Social Emotional Wellbeing Initiative Team, and youth voices anchored the day through impactful panels, interactive workshops, and artistic performances that grounded conversations in lived experience and solutions.

A major highlight was the keynote address by Sarah L. Rudman, MD, MPH, the Public Health Officer & Director of Santa Clara County Public Health Department, as well as the release of the newly published 2026 Santa Clara County Children’s Data Book, a 70+ page resource featuring over 80 indicators on youth well‑being across basic needs, health, and education, widely used by leaders across sectors to inform equitable policy and systems change.

The Summit concluded by celebrating community leadership through the Bold Steps for Children and the Changemaker for Children Award. Together, the event reinforced a shared commitment to ensuring every child in Santa Clara County is safe and stable, healthy, successful in learning, and thriving in life.

2026 Bold Steps for Children Award: Jóvenes Activos

is a youth‑led program of and receives the Bold Steps for Children Award due to its meaningful impact on East San José youth and its strong, community‑rooted partnerships. Serving young people ages 12–18, the program fosters leadership, creativity, and civic engagement through mentorship, workshops, and hands‑on organizing. Its collaborations with and have empowered youth to lead violence‑prevention and safety campaigns, including the We All Play a Role initiative. Jóvenes Activos also partners with local arts and cultural organizations such as Local Color and the School of Arts and Culture to create public art projects like the East Side Mural, strengthening neighborhood identity and youth expression. Through additional civic engagement efforts with groups like Amigos de Guadalupe, the program mobilizes youth voters and amplifies young voices in shaping a more equitable future.

Changemaker for Children Award: Sacred Heart Community Service

receives the Changemaker for Children Award in recognition of its decades‑long, transformative impact on children and families in Santa Clara County. Founded in 1964, SHCS has grown from a small neighborhood food program into one of the region’s leading anti‑poverty institutions. Its designation as the county’s Community Action Agency in 2008 further expanded its leadership in developing countywide strategies that strengthen child wellbeing, deepen community engagement, and advance economic justice. For more than sixty years, Sacred Heart has delivered comprehensive programs supporting children’s stability and long‑term success—from essential resources such as food, clothing, and rental assistance to early childhood education, homework clubs, youth development, and evidence‑based parenting programs offered in partnership with the County’s Department of Family and Children’s Services. SHCS’s exemplifies leadership, collaborative approach, and multi‑generational impact.
