Today marked a monumental chapter in San José history. Members of the San José/Silicon Valley NAACP branch stood on the steps of City Hall as San José officially declared May 12 as African Heritage Day. For the first time they raised the African Union flag, making it a historic moment in San José.

The NAACP remains dedicated to advocacy, accountability, and the celebration of our excellence. Let this flag serve as a reminder that we are seen, we are heard, and we are home.

NAACP San José | Silicon Valley branch celebrates AAHNPI Heritage month!

Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month is observed each May to honor the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of these communities in the United States.

The origins trace back to 1978, when Congress passed a resolution designating the first 10 days of May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. The timing was chosen to commemorate two key milestones: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, built largely by Chinese laborers.

In 1992, the observance was officially expanded to a full month, becoming Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. Over time, the term AANHPI has been adopted to more fully recognize the diversity of these communities.

Today, AANHPI Heritage Month is a time to celebrate cultural heritage, reflect on history, and recognize the lasting impact of AANHPI individuals across the nation.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the NAACP San José|Silicon Valley branch is raising awareness, advocating for protection, and uplifting every child’s right to a safe and nurturing environment.

Every child deserves to grow up free from harm, with access to support, education, and opportunity. Together, we can break cycles of abuse through community action, education, and accountability.

Let’s use our voices to protect, empower, and invest in our children, because their future is our future.
