Celebrate freedom and liberty on July 4th at 10:30 am in Dutch Flat. The community, with its Victorian homes and pine trees, is so welcoming and instantly transports visitors to the Gold Rush era. Dutch Flat had a bustling Chinese community of 2,000-3,500 people during the 19th century, which was typical for Chinatowns along the West Coast at that time. https://www.goldendrift.org/4th-of-july

After the parade, join the popular Summit Tunnel Tour! RSVP at https://forms.gle/2gAQLwxW5CvSs8Ez7

Long before Cannery Row became world famous, Chinese fishing families helped build Monterey’s commercial fishing industry. Beginning in the mid-1800s, they established fishing villages along the Monterey shoreline, bringing generations of knowledge, skill, and innovation to the bay. They pioneered methods for harvesting squid and abalone, helped create trade networks, and played an essential role in shaping Monterey’s working waterfront and fishing culture.

Despite facing discrimination, exclusion laws, and even the destruction of their villages by fire, the legacy of these communities lives on in Monterey Bay’s fishing heritage.

As we recognize AAPI Heritage Month, we honor the resilience, contributions, and enduring impact of the Chinese fishing communities whose work helped shape the future of Monterey Bay fisheries.
