Three-year-old Beast is a good boy who has found himself in a situation he never asked for.

His owner was unhoused and surrendered him because she could no longer provide for him. Now, instead of being with the person he knew, Beast is confined to a kennel, and he is scared and struggling.

Outside of his kennel, Beast loves toys, can play fetch forever, and seeks comfort with volunteers, who have already grown fond of him. Beast has also done well meeting other dogs. But the stress of shelter confinement has taken a toll. Beast is now experiencing severe fear, anxiety, and stress in his kennel and can become
overwhelmed.

His kennel behavior reflects how overwhelmed he is in the shelter, not necessarily how he will behave in a home.

He needs someone experienced who can give him a quieter environment, time to decompress, and the opportunity to feel safe again.

Beast landed at the shelter through no fault of his own. He deserves the chance for a real home ❤️🐾

💔 LOBO WILL BE EUTHANIZED IF HE DOES NOT RECEIVE RESCUE PLACEMENT BY 5:00 PM ON 08/27/26 🚨 We are heartbroken by Lobo’s past, and after everything he has endured, his life is now at risk.

Lobo is a beautiful 4-year-old, 55-pound dog who was confiscated after reportedly spending his life tethered in a backyard. He arrived thin, with a matted coat and ears in terrible condition from fly strike.

Lobo wasn’t tethered out there alone. His companion dog was also tethered and tragically died from heat stroke right next to him.

Despite the life he came from, Lobo is leaning into the affection he’s receiving, enjoying petting, and loving his time in the yard. He even did well meeting another sweet dog.

Lobo needs Rescue ASAP because he doesn’t appreciate being restrained for vaccines and other medical handling. After a lonely life of neglect, are we really surprised that restraint isn’t something familiar to him?

Lobo needs time. Time to decompress. Time to build trust.
After everything this dog has survived, we hope someone will give him the chance to finally experience what it means to be safe, cared for, and loved.

Update 8/21: 🌈 We are heartbroken to share that no foster or rescue stepped forward in time to save Bertram. The shelter proceeded with euthanasia.

Bertram, humans failed you. You deserved owners/adopters who wouldn’t give up on you.

Your life mattered, and we are so sorry we couldn’t save you.

🔥 BERTRAM WILL BE EUTHANIZED IF HE DOES NOT RECEIVE RESCUE PLACEMENT BY 5PM ON 8/19/26

Bertram is a sensitive 3-yr-old, 45 lb boy who needs time to trust new people, but once comfortable, his sweet personality comes through. He can be shy with new handlers and is especially sensitive around his neck and collar, so a gentle approach works best.

Once acquainted, Bertram enjoys attention and checking in for head pats. Sit down and he may quietly place both paws on your leg, observing his surroundings while enjoying your company. Stuffies bring out his joyful puppy side, and he loves flinging them around the yard.

His Doggy Day Out walkers reported that he’s anxious about getting into the car and walking in unfamiliar places. In the shelter, he’s had friendly interactions with polite dogs but can be nervous around others, so a slow introduction to resident pets is recommended.

Bertram was adopted and returned less than 24 hours later due to reportedly biting when family members tried to move him off the furniture. He made contact each time but did not break skin. The shelter labeled this resource guarding, but context matters: Bertram is a shy dog who was in a new environment and can be sensitive to handling. His response may have been driven by uncertainty, stress, and discomfort with being moved rather than true resource guarding.

That doesn’t mean the behavior should be dismissed. An adopter should manage furniture access, avoid confrontational handling, and use positive reinforcement to teach an “off” cue while Bertram learns to trust.

Bertram needs a patient, adult-only home that will give him time to decompress. Once he feels safe, he is affectionate, playful, and eager to connect. Bertram has challenges, but he also has a lot to offer the right family.

🚨 TROY WILL BE EUTHANIZED IF HE DOES NOT RECEIVE RESCUE PLACEMENT BY 5:00 PM ON 08/21/26 🚨

Troy is a handsome 2-year-old, 66-pound mixed-breed dog. If you only saw Troy in his kennel, you might miss the goofy, loving boy he really is.

Outside the kennel, Troy is affectionate, playful, social, and eager to engage with people. On a recent Dog Day Out, he greeted his handler with lots of affection, was easy to leash, happily hopped into the car, and enjoyed a 5.5-mile walk at Hellyer Park. After settling from his initial excitement, he walked confidently on a loose leash. He explored, rolled in the grass, and absolutely loved belly rubs and cuddles. He passed birds, geese, bicycles, e-bikes, wheelchairs, children, and strollers without reacting.

Troy is trainable and eager to learn. He is potty trained, treat motivated, and already knows sit, down, look, and touch. He is comfortable being handled all over and accepts hugs and close affection. Troy has participated in playgroups and had appropriate interactions with female dogs. He can be reactive toward some male dogs, so introductions should be handled thoughtfully.

Troy's biggest struggle is the shelter environment. After so many months of confinement, his kennel behavior has become inconsistent. Sometimes he comes forward to greet people; other times he retreats to the back or becomes overwhelmed. That is very different from the dog his handlers see once he gets out.
Troy has spent 3/4ths of a year confined to a small kennel with limited opportunities for enrichment. He needs the chance to decompress outside the shelter and show someone who he really is.

Zazu is a 6-year-old, 56-pound handsome guy who is a total people lover outside of his kennel. He is friendly, social, affectionate, and enjoys attention and being petted.

Zazu is playful, energetic, and very food motivated and he’ll happily work for tasty treats! He loves stuffed toys and would much rather wrestle with a plushie than chase a ball. He also has a hilarious habit of rolling around and digging in the shelter kiddie pools.

Zazu initially shared a kennel with the small female companion he arrived with, and he was instrumental in helping her gain confidence in the shelter. He has also done well in playgroups and has been friendly and appropriate during dog introductions. He enjoys playing with female dogs but can be more selective with some male dogs, so a meet and greet with any potential canine companions is recommended.
Zazu has been placed on final due to kennel stress observed by staff. Confinement has taken a toll and he's become reactive to unfamiliar people while in his kennel. That behavior does not tell the whole story. Once Zazu is outside, he quickly shakes off the stress and readily seeks attention from his handlers.

His goofy, affectionate personality is sure to win people over once the kennel bars are removed. Zazu needs the opportunity to decompress outside of the shelter and show someone what a fun, happy dog he can be.

🚨 MJ WILL BE EUTHANIZED IF SHE DOES NOT RECEIVE RESCUE PLACEMENT BY 5:00 PM ON 08/17/26 🚨

MJ is a 1 Year Old, 55-pound Belgian Malinois. MJ's shelter notes may sound intimidating, but the whole picture tells a different story. Like many young Belgian Malinois, she struggles with the overwhelming shelter environment. In her kennel she barks, and appears highly stressed, yet once outside she transforms into an affectionate, curious companion.

MJ walks well on leash, enjoys exploring, loves agility equipment, knows "sit" and "paw," takes treats gently, and happily leans in for cuddles. Volunteers describe her as wiggly, social with people, and happiest simply spending time with her human friends. She frequently checks in with her handler and prefers to stay busy alongside her person rather than displaying the intense drive often associated with her breed.

MJ is dog selective and can become reactive when unfamiliar dogs get too close, so she will need an experienced person that can continue working on her behavior in a calm, controlled environment.

Please help us find an experienced foster/rescue that can give this sweet young girl the opportunity she deserves.

Thank you to everyone who shared her video and helped get her seen. Dosi-Do received a wonderful application, and we worked with the shelter to get the adopter approved to adopt her with a waiver.

🚨 DOSI-DO WILL BE EUTHANIZED IF SHE DOES NOT RECEIVE RESCUE PLACEMENT BY 5:00 PM ON 08/14/26 🚨

Dosi-Do is a 2-year-old, 55-pound female who finds herself in the shelter for the second time in her short existence on the planet. She’s a classic example of a dog with barrier frustration. At the kennel, she can become aroused and may bark, growl, and jump on the door.

Once the barrier is removed, Dosi-Do quickly becomes playful and affectionate with people. She solicits attention, leans into petting, crawls into laps, and plays with toys. Volunteers report that she is easy in and out of her kennel and has an excellent sit cue. On walks, she can become jumpy and excited, but takes treats nicely when calm, and handlers have consistently been able to redirect her attention with treats or by calling her.

Dosi-Do has been placed on final due to her reactivity toward other dogs. During leashed and muzzled introductions with helper dogs, she displayed frustration, although she has not yet had an opportunity to acclimate to the muzzle. It is unclear whether her reactivity would escalate to aggression, so placement in a home with other dogs should be considered carefully and would require appropriate management. Her reactivity may improve with gradual exposure, controlled introductions, and positive reinforcement.

Dosi-Do may not be an easy fit for every home, but she shouldn’t be dismissed because she struggles in the shelter environment. She needs someone who can work with what she is—and appreciate what she is not.

Meet Robert Sam Shepherd (his formal name), but you can call him Sam. Before coming to the shelter, this handsome German Shepherd lived in the community and kept the company of colorful people and plenty of other dogs. The shelter environment has been much harder for him. In his kennel, Sam can become fearful and defensive with unfamiliar handlers, and staff has observed alarm barking, baring his teeth, and lunging.

Out of the kennel, you’ll see a very different dog. Sam enjoys sniffing and exploring, walks nicely, stays close to his handler, and solicits affection from his friends. He has allowed handling from head to tail and leans into back rubs. He's been relaxed enough to settle in the shade beside people, and he has shown no reactivity to other dogs, even when other dogs have growled at him.

To be honest, we’re not sure why Sam is on final and a candidate for euthanasia, since he’s already proven he’s a good dog out of the kennel and out of the shelter.

Sam is 3 years old and 60 pounds. He needs a foster or adopter who is willing to give him the chance to show that side of himself — and who understands that the shelter kennel may be the worst possible place to judge him.

Sam needs someone willing to meet the dog outside the kennel. ❤️

Daniel is a 1-year-old, 7-pound little guy who is understandably overwhelmed by the shelter environment. Staff has documented persistent fear-based behavior, including retreating, alarm barking, growling, lunging, and snapping when approached or handled.

But each day, Daniel is starting to feel a little more comfortable. In his most recent interaction with staff, Daniel allowed himself to be picked up and petted, an encouraging step forward for a dog who has been so fearful of handling.

Daniel also recently spent time in the play yard with one of the shelter's longtime volunteers. After just a few minutes, he began seeking the volunteer's company, stayed close to him, and even became playful. These moments are showing us that beneath his fear is a dog capable of making positive connections when given time, patience, and a low-pressure environment.

Daniel needs an experienced rescue willing to give him the space and support he needs to decompress and continue building trust at his own pace. The shelter environment is not allowing him to show us who he can be, but little by little, Daniel is trying.

🚨 CHANEL WILL BE EUTHANIZED IF SHE DOES NOT RECEIVE RESCUE PLACEMENT BY 5:00 PM ON 08/11/26 🚨

Chanel is a social, affectionate 2-year-old, 20-pound girl who loves people once she's out of her kennel. She walks nicely on leash, greets calm dogs appropriately, enjoys affection, and happily leans into petting. She tolerates being picked up without concern and shows a relaxed and gentle demeanor outside the kennel.

The shelter has documented food guarding behavior in the kennel. When food is present, Chanel has displayed freezing, growling, barking, lunging, and attempts to bite when handlers approach her kennel near her food bowl. Studies have shown that food guarding in the shelter environment does not reliably predict issues in a home. Regardless, food guarding behavior is straightforward to manage and modify using positive reinforcement.

Chanel's previous owner reported that there were fights between Chanel and the other resident dog, though no details about the circumstances have been shared. Because so little is known about what occurred, Chanel would do best as the only pet in an adult-only home.

Chanel needs an experienced foster willing to safely manage her food guarding behavior if it presents outside the shelter. With appropriate management, positive reinforcement, and behavior modification, she can be successful in the right home.
