A core part of Community Cycles model is upcycling. The vast majority of our bikes are donated and we try to get them refurbished and working again for our clients and customers.

Occasionally we get some new bikes donated so we try to work with our partners to responsibly dispose of packaging wherever possible. In this case, we’re thrilled to give the cardboard from some children’s bikes donated by a local business to Our City Forest. Our City Forest does urban tree, planting, and vegetation maintenance all around San Jose.

It’s also a popular place to volunteer with our clients who complete our Earn-a-Bike program. Thank you for your awesome partnership!

Luis Lopez worked as a bus driver for 27 years driving long distance, commuter buses.

When his wife died at a young age he had to give up his job to take care of the kids. He started working in property management and ran the night shift at a Best Western in Santa Maria, California, but after he was passed over for promotion because of being Mexican, he moved to the Bay Area.

When we asked him how he got involved in our program, he pointed to his eye.

“I lost my eye due to cancer and decided I didn’t feel safe driving anymore.”

He started taking the bus, but found it cumbersome to get around then a friend recommended our Community Cycle’s Earn-a-Bike program. He has completed the volunteer hours three times because his bikes have been stolen, despite having good locks. He says now he tries to keep it indoors and practically sleeps with it.

“Wherever I go, my bicycle goes with me.”

We hosted our first free bike repair clinic in Gilroy in partnership with the library. Gilroy is a underserved area with many bikes that provide essential transportation to communities with very little service opportunities.

Our next free repair clinic will be on April 17th from 10-12pm. Come early to get in line.

In order to support as many clients as possible, and due to limited tools, these are safety and reliability focused repairs. We will fix flat tires and make sure there’s at least one working brake and one working gear.

Thank you to the Gilroy library for partnering with us!

Steven joined us through a WPEX program six months ago. He’s been in our shop 20 hours a week, learning bike mechanic skills and working alongside our team. At the end of this month, his time in our program will end and we’re so excited to see what he does next.

Thank you for all of your dedication, good laughs, and time at the bench!

Bike donations are the life blood of Community Cycles. Without bikes, we can’t make any of our social programs run.

As the weather starts to get warmer, demand for bikes rises. If you have an extra bicycle that you would like to donate, come by 35 Wilson Ave., Tuesday through Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM to drop it off.

We are a 501(c)(3) and all donations are tax deductible.
