For years, Pushpalatha would travel to old-age homes and NGOs across Bangalore, sit with the residents, talk to them and listen to them. She often helped the staff with whatever they needed doing that day. All she wanted was to give company to people who had been forgotten.
One of the NGOs she visited regularly was in Vasanthpura. One day she went there and learned that the person who ran it had passed away. His kids were unable to run the home anymore and had decided to shut it down.
There were 20 beneficiaries living there. Elderly people who had already been abandoned by their families once, and mentally challenged adults who had nobody at all. Once the home closed, they would be out on the streets with no one.
Pushpalatha could not sleep that night, thinking about those 20 people becoming homeless again.
So she decided to step in.
She was constructing a PG in Bangalore at the time. She repurposed the whole building into a home and took every one of them in. She had no funding for it and no staff. She only knew that these 20 people deserved better.
That is how Pushpavana began.
Pushpavana now houses close to 30 beneficiaries at any given time, elderly people abandoned by their families, mentally challenged and differently-abled adults, and anyone who has nowhere else to go. They get meals, medicines, medical care and hygiene essentials. They also get something that is harder to arrange, love. Pushpalatha celebrates their birthdays. She makes sure nobody is left out during festivals. She feeds them, looks after them and loves them like her own. The residents know her as their only family, because for most of them she is.
For over 14 years, she has done this for hundreds of people who had no one else left.
A home like this runs on meals, medicines and hygiene items that have to be bought every single month. That is exactly what a donation through KindKart pays for.
Pushpalatha stepped in when no one else did. You are the reason she can keep going.
