This Nutrition Month, we’re celebrating more freshly prepared meals for more SFUSD students!

Investing in upgraded serving lines that have temperature controlled bays at 10 middle and high schools (where a large portion of our student body attend) has translated into reducing the number of individually wrapped items, increasing our sustainability, and allowed us to launch fresh choice salad bars.

Our nutrition policy is one of the most progressive in the nation, and with that we believe that nutritious food can also be fun, delicious, and beautiful. Just look at those watermelon radishes on the salad bar at !

What an incredible day we had last week! 🌟

Our students brought their A-game to GENYOUth’s first-ever Super Schools Student Culinary Showdown, proving that when you give young people a seat at the table, they don’t just participate – they innovate.

and culinary students went head-to-head in John O’Connell High School’s commercial student kitchen () in the heart San Francisco’s Mission District. They created original school meal recipes that are nutritious, delicious, and culturally relevant. Both teams did outstanding work displaying the skills they learn all school year and demonstrating their ability to translate a task into delicious recipes. ’s culinary team took home the $10,000 culinary grant, and culinary team earned $5,000 – but every student here is already a winner.

These aren’t just recipes. They’re proof that student voice drives real change in school nutrition. The winning dishes will be featured on school menus and served at Taste of the NFL during Super Bowl LX weekend.

Huge congratulations to all our student chefs, and thank you to GENYOUth, celebrity chef mentors, judges, and partners for investing in the next generation of culinary leaders.

What a day!

Everyone is welcome here — it’s a simple statement that can make a huge difference. While this has always been our goal, this school year we launched a new initiative that encompassed a series of signs for all dining spaces across the district and hands on training with dining staff, along with testing more culturally diverse recipes for the menu. The goal — to remind students (whether they eat school food or not) that they are welcome in the dining space and will be treated with respect and offered a free meal.

When we say free meals for all, we mean every student that would like a meal will have access to 1 free breakfast and lunch every school day, regardless of their background.

National School Lunch Week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the SFUSD School Food Professionals — the meals they offer, the work they do, and the community they build in the serving line. Each school day, students are offered whole fruit and veggies and nutrient dense entrees, all served by welcoming dining staff in an environment where they can belong.

This week we’ll be visiting some schools to encourage school lunch participation through student tasting events! If you want to get involved at your school this week, or even at home, check out the resources at our .

When students enter a dining space on an SFUSD school campus, we want them to feel welcome, respected, safe, and worthy of belonging. Creating a strong school food culture starts with the student experience. This Pride Month, we want you to know that everyone is welcome, celebrated, and safe in our dining spaces. If you’re a student that hasn’t tried school food before or an adult unsure about your student’s school food experience, we encourage you to give school food a chance! Happy Pride to our students, staff, and community members who celebrate 🎊

It’s National School Breakfast Week! Wohoo! This week we’re celebrating Breakfast in the Classroom expansions, which involves the entire school to get involved to support healthy morning habits! Thank you to all of our schools who have embraced Breakfast in the Classroom to help ensure more students can eat in the morning!

We’re also asking an important question, did you eat breakfast today?!

School Breakfast helps students start the morning energized! When students eat breakfast, they are better listeners, learners, and classmates!

In SFUSD, every student has access to a nutritious breakfast free of charge, and we stand by the importance of free school meals. School food is food justice!

We recently had the opportunity to partner with School Food Professionals and the Chef Ann Foundation to be featured by Eater! We are incredibly proud of the work our skilled dining staff do everyday, so the opportunity to highlight Chef Josh and his wonderful team at our McAteer Culinary Center was impossible to pass on! This team combined have multiple decades worth of culinary experience and we’re grateful they choose to hone their skills while nourishing 2+ high schools and 11 early education sites.

This video shines a light on what the future of school food looks like, and we’re excited to share it with you. Check it out!

It’s more important than ever to recognize and uplift the influence and contributions of the black community this . As strong proponents for the importance of nutritious food, we can’t help but start with Dr. George Washington Carver.

He was a pioneer in agriculture, focused on developing sustainable farming practices to prevent soil depletion and educating other farmers on his research and findings. One of his outstanding achievements that we reap the benefits from in School Food is how he revolutionized the way the world utilizes sweet potatoes. Sweet potato fries are still a staple on our School Lunch menu! We also feature a simple mashed sweet potato recipe in our root vegetable Harvest of the Month resources.

Dr. Carver believed that access to nutritious food helped improve overall health and wellness.
His dedication to agricultural research and education helped to usher in the food and environmental justice movement.

Today and every day we thank Dr. Carver for his dedication to improving farming practices and cultivating more sustainable crops.
