RRUFF Healing Heroes Program

RRUFF Healing Heroes Program Providing funding for service dog training expenses to disabled veterans and first responders with PTSD and other invisible illnesses.

Objective: An innovative program to train service dogs for veterans by utilizing the RRUFF Special Needs Area, local dog rescue organizations, veterinarians and approved service dog trainers. Program Criteria: All donations will be deposited in the “Healing Heroes” account and will be used as designated by RRUFF unless otherwise specified by the donor. A donor may restrict use of the funds for

a specific veteran, or any other reasonable criteria established by the donor and agreed to by RRUFF. Healing Heroes program is available to ALL qualified veterans, regardless of their community or school affiliation. Approved trainers must abide by the RRUFF User Agreement. All trainers must provide proof of insurance and name RRUFF as second insured. Qualified veterans would receive a scholarship, when money is available to provide training from puppy to certification. All veterans are required participate in the initial informational class taught by program trainers. The informational class will go over how to get a dog, what type of dog to get, service dog training commitments, certification, etc. This class should be held once a month (or as needed) and is the first step all veterans must take to be enrolled in the program. Veterans will complete trainer’s application, participate in the evaluation process ; and if they are training their own dog, the trainer will assess that dog to be sure it meets the necessary guidelines to qualify as a service animal. The trainers will work with veterans individually to discuss their training and canine needs. Veterans will be responsible for obtaining their own canine. RRUFF can help with animal resources (rescues, shelters, breeders). RRUFF will provide a canine resource list. The trainers will set forth their requirements for all training in this program. They will also train additional trainers if there are interested veteran candidates that meet all requirements. RRUFF will do grant writing to raise funds for this program. RRUFF representatives will do regular presentations to community service groups, including veteran’s groups for the purpose of education and solicitation of donations for the program.

A major milestone for RRUFF Healing Heroes 💙🐾

For the first time ever, we are assisting in funding a Facility Dog placement through Althea Canines at UC Berkeley Police Department.

Handler interviews are currently taking place, and we are incredibly excited to follow and share this journey as it unfolds.

This opportunity also represents an exciting expansion of our impact into Alameda County, allowing us to continue growing our reach across the Greater Sacramento Region and Northern California.

Facility Dogs provide comfort, support, and connection within high-stress environments, and we are honored to help bring this long-time vision to life.

More to come soon 💙

1,000 hours (at least!) leading to this moment. Countless moments of trust, patience, growth, and hard work. 💙🐾

We are beyond proud to celebrate the graduation of Magic and his handler, Katie, through Althea Canines service dog program.

Katie, a first responder, and Magic have spent countless hours training together to reach this milestone, building an incredible partnership along the way. From public access skills to task work and everything in between, this accomplishment represents an enormous amount of dedication from both handler and dog.

Service dog training is not easy. It takes consistency, resilience, and commitment, and graduating from a program like this is truly something special.

Congratulations to Katie and Magic on this amazing achievement. We cannot wait to continue cheering you both on in this next chapter together 💛

Today, we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

At RRUFF Healing Heroes, Memorial Day also serves as a reminder of the lasting impact service can have long after the uniform comes off. We are honored every day to support Veterans and First Responders navigating life after service alongside incredible service dogs who help provide comfort, stability, and connection.

Today, we pause to remember those who never made it home and hold their loved ones especially close in our hearts.

We remember ❤️

A little behind-the-scenes look at service dog training in action 🐾💙

Earlier this week, we had the opportunity to shadow two of our Hero and Dog teams at Stage Canine Development, and Udon and Sandy absolutely crushed it!

This class was part of a 3-part restaurant etiquette course included within All Stage’s general obedience offerings that our participants can join alongside their individualized service dog training.

During this first session, the teams focused on “Front,” where the dogs learned to calmly lay at their handler’s feet in situations like checking in at a restaurant host stand. They also practiced maneuvering safely under tables and staying clear of foot traffic in busy public spaces.

These may seem like small skills, but they are incredibly important pieces of public access training and building confidence in real-world environments.

Udon began training in January, while Sandy started last August, and both teams are making amazing progress!

One of the coolest parts of getting to shadow this class was seeing the bond between both teams and how much trust has already been built between these Heroes and their dogs. You can already see the impact these partnerships are making in everyday life. Sandy’s handler even shared that he’ll be going back to school soon 💛

Watching these partnerships grow in real time is truly something special.

Happy National Rescue Dog Day from all of us at RRUFF Healing Heroes 💙🐾

Today we’re giving a special shoutout to Sky, rescue pup to our Executive Director, Brianna.

We know firsthand just how special rescue dogs are and how much love, comfort, personality, and joy they bring into our lives. Today we’re celebrating the dogs who got a second chance and became beloved family members, or partners in healing, in the process 💛

A few weeks ago, we hosted our first Paw Prints & Pledges event… and I’m still smiling looking back at these photos 🐾

From puppy painting masterpieces to coffee, pastries, and pup cups (huge thank you to Bloom Coffee & Tea & Starbucks), to meeting some of our service dogs in training with Althea Canines, including Magic, who’s getting close to graduation, it was such a special day.

We also had some amazing local vendors join us and truly bring the space to life.

And because of this community, we raised nearly $500 toward service dog training, that’s about 20 days of training or nearly the cost of a spay/neuter for one of our heroes in the program.

Huge thank you to our event sponsor, Poppy Bank, for helping make this all possible 💛

This was our first one… definitely not our last.

💙🐾 We are incredibly honored to have received the Ruhkala Community Service Award a few weeks ago

This is a meaningful recognition here in Rocklin, honoring individuals, businesses, and organizations that have made a lasting impact on the community

Our Founder, Vicki Curtis, accepted the award and shared the story of how RRUFF began: rooted in a deep commitment to both people and dogs, and a desire to serve

We’re grateful to Diane Foos of Dogtopia of Rocklin for the nomination, and to our board, supporters, and community who make this work possible every day

💛 This recognition belongs to all of you

🚨💙 Final hours

This is what your support looks like

Not just a dog
Not just a program

A moment of calm
A sense of safety
A way forward after everything has changed

For so many Veterans and First Responders, this kind of support can mean the difference between struggling through each day… and truly living again

💛 There is still time to make an impact
