Earwigs may scare some folks, with their pincers and a name that implies they crawl into your ears (!) but they are not a health risk. Their pincers are used for capturing prey and mating. Even if provoked, their pinch is not strong enough to break the skin, though they may emit a foul smelling liquid. Their role in the garden is mixed. They are predators of problem insects like aphids but their also munch some flowers, tender plants, and vegetables.
