Meet this Sweet Addition to our LMI Family!

Lalaine Quinan, MD, or Doc Lala as we all call her, is currently a hospitalist based in Tarlac City, Philippines. She was previously the Municipal Health Officer, (MHO) and Municipal Nutrition Action Officer-designate of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro. She is used to wearing many hats, juggling academe and teaching, mentoring, clinical and administrative work.

Her interests include the following:
~animal welfare (she is mother of 4 cats)
~poetry and literary arts
~fine arts and theater arts

She aspires to lend her skills and talents to create positive change in health care and underserved communities. She does this with LMI through teaching prenatal Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) to midwives and other front-liners, and lecturing on safe and healthy pregnancy and motherhood.

What more could we ask of our selfless, generous, humble, and kind volunteers from USA, Canada and Philippines?

A typhoon may have struck. Power outages may have made ultrasound use difficult. Wi-Fi may have disappeared. Yet none of these challenges could diminish their joyful spirits or their determination to help save the lives of pregnant women and their unborn babies.

Their flights back to Manila were canceled several times, forcing them to endure hours of land and ferry travel just to make their way home.

The physical exhaustion must have been taking its toll, yet somehow, they still managed to keep smiles on their faces.

Truly, when people love what they do, it shows.

That is what the Life Matters International team is all about—serving with compassion, persevering through challenges, and finding joy in making a difference in the lives of others.

So grateful for each and every one of you. ❤️

The moment of truth had come…

Coron OPOCUS trainees’ final hands-on exam with Ma’am Chrissy Schutzer who travelled from Oregon, USA to give her final yay or nay before graduation.

To our trainees, we could not be more proud of you. Your dedication, tenacity and hardwork shall bear fruits soon… saving lives.

No music, no talking here! A big sacrifice on my part! 😭😂We were to enter Batman’s cave. 🤣😂

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is an 8.2 km navigable underground river located within a UNESCO World Heritage site in Palawan, Philippines.

A 45-minute guided paddleboat tour takes visitors through pitch-black, spectacular limestone caves filled with dramatic stalactites and thousands of bats.

Of course, after medical mission: time for retreat and group bonding.

Ugong Rock Cave is a 75-foot limestone formation in Barangay Tagabinet, Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

It gets its name—ugong, or "echo"—from the hollow ringing sound the rocks make when tapped.

We hiked, squeezed through narrow cave crevices to the summit, and ziplined down.

Our final date of OPOCUS may have arrived, but the passion, determination, and commitment to learning continue. It was even a challenge to get our trainees to stop scanning space – space a true statement to their enthusiasm and dedication.

To all our new trainees from your LMI family: may you always keep the fire for learning, burning brightly.

Life Matters International (LMI) is again a Richmond, Ca based non-profit dedicated to reducing maternal and infant mortality by training primary caregivers, providing preventive care, and equipping communities in underserved regions with essential medical technology: ultrasound.

We are very proud of our professional trainees from Cuyo, Agutaya and Magsaysay from the different islands of Palawan. Exhaustion did not hi der their learning. Resilient!
