In 2021, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and other prominent, reproductive medical organizations took the unprecedented step of formally recognizing February 28 to March 1—bridging the end of Black History Month and the beginning of Women’s History Month—as a time to honor the Mothers of Gynecology and other enslaved Black women whose bodies were exploited in the advancement of obstetrics and gynecology. This acknowledgment was a crucial step toward confronting persistent obstetric racism and violence experienced by Black pregnant and postpartum individuals across healthcare and public health systems.

Modern gynecology was built on their exploitation and suffering. Confronting this painful history is essential not only for acknowledging the Mothers of Gynecology and other enslaved Black women’s humanity and contributions but also for understanding the deep roots of medical mistrust in Black communities. Recognizing this legacy is a critical step toward advancing culturally responsive, equitable care that centers patient dignity, addresses historical injustices, and fosters trust between healthcare providers and the communities they serve.
