Fibershed

Fibershed Fibershed is a non-profit organization that develops regional, regenerative fiber systems.

Fibershed is a non-profit organization that develops equity-focused regional and land regenerating natural fiber and dye systems. Our work expands opportunities to implement climate beneficial agriculture, rebuild regional manufacturing, and connect end-users to the source of our fiber through direct educational offerings. We are transforming the economic and ecologic systems that clothe us to gen

erate equitable and climate change ameliorating textile cultures. We envision clothing ourselves through diverse and decentralized textile systems that operationalize equitable soil-to-soil processes. We are uplifting the voices and strengthening the capacity of place-based grassroots textile communities that are directly enhancing their regional economies for the purpose of generating permanent and lasting systems of localized fiber and natural dye production. We see a nourishing tradition emerging that connects the wearer to the fields where clothes are grown in a system that can last for countless generations into the future. Through a host of scientifically vetted soil health-enhancing practices, paired with regional textile districts, we will create the new standard for textile material culture creation.

Tickets are going fast! Make sure to snag yours for the upcoming workshop "Create Natural Dye from Sea Urchins," lead by our friends Seelie Studio & Materevolve at the Fibershed Learning Center on Saturday, July 25.

You’ll learn about the nuances of creating natural dye from sea urchin spines, including how to harvest them, process them responsibly, and create the best dye bath that yields lasting and vibrant pinks. Margaret, the founder of Seelie Studio, will share her journey to dyeing with sea urchins and the many mistakes she made along the way. She will be joined by Krystle Moody Wood, the founder and principal consultant of Materevolve, LLC., a consultancy firm driven to lead the evolution of our materials world. Krystle will share her experience in addressing today's most critical issues at the intersection of sustainable textile and ocean health and the key things you can do to support building a blue material world.

It will be so much fun! More info and tickets avail here:

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Fibershed Learning Center in Point Reyes Station on Saturday, and to the producers who made it worth coming to!

Tables were filled with locally grown dye plants, seeds, dyeable fiber, and yarn from across the Fibershed region. People came from all across the community! And demonstrations ran through the afternoon. We had wet felting with Sarah at Bodega Pastures, a natural dye demonstration with flowers from Charlene Schmid at , and a printing demonstration on Climate Beneficial wool from Clara Pitt at Kassenhoff Growers. We also had a tour of the dye garden, lead by our own Rebecca Burgess.

What a wonderful day!

This past week, we joined Michigan Fibershed at Capons Farm to inaugurate the THREADS Institute at the University of Michigan, a new research hub dedicated to studying natural fiber systems. We marked the occasion with a ceremonial seeding of the flax field alongside Melissa Duhaime, THREADS director and professor of ecology, and Crystal, community organizer and flax advocate. The institute will be carrying out Climate Beneficial research studies in flax fields on this farm, along with other local growers. Thrilled to see this take root!

Our Natural Dyer's Market is coming up this weekend, May 9, at the Learning Center. It will be a full-day gathering for fiber artists, makers, and anyone curious about the art of natural dyeing. (Moms invited, too!)

Today, we're spotlighting just a few of the vendors who will be joining us, some of the growers and processors doing the work to build a resilient regional natural fiber supply chain. Meet Bodega Pastures(regenerative wool and meat from 1,000 acres of California coastal ranchland), Valley Oak Wool Mill (custom small-batch fiber milling), and Integrity Alpacas (ranch-raised alpaca fiber and goods made with traceability and care!). Find the full vendor list and more event details at the link in bio.

This past weekend, 50+ community members gathered for our first-ever Community Shearing Day at the Fibershed Learning Center. Jacob sheep, known for their four horns (!!), striking spotted fleece, and dual-purpose wool, made the perfect teachers as hands of all ages got their first feel for shearing, livestock health, and raw fiber prep. Seeing young people discover these skills alongside experienced growers is exactly the kind of intergenerational learning that grows the next generation of farmers, shepherds, and makers.

What a beautiful day we spent at Golden State Linen’s annual community harvest day. (Their mission to revive small-scale flax production begins right here in Northern Californian.) Head to the link in bio to read more about it.

Flax is one of the oldest cultivated plants on earth—and, these days, one of the hardest to find made in America. Sandy Fisher and Durl Van Alstyne of Golden State Linen (the only small-scale flax processor in the United States!) are working to change that, growing and processing flax fiber in Northern California with soil-building practices, help from their community, and an eye toward bringing a once-thriving regional industry back to life.

2026 is the UN’s International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, a global acknowledgment that the people raising animals on working landscapes deserve recognition and viable livelihoods.

Last week, we were lucky to spend time with one of the remaining sheepherding families in Wyoming, and the regional wool mill — Mountain Meadow Wool — that is committed to supporting local sheep ranchers that fertilize the soil, reduce wildfire fuel, enhance water retention and foster native plant diversity, by carrying forward the traditional ways of transhumance, or grazing with the seasons.
