Asian Women's Shelter

Asian Women's Shelter The survivors we work with every day embody the meaning of courage, hope, and determination. Please call our crisis line if you or someone you know need help.

SF Asian Women's Shelter works to eliminate domestic violence by promoting the social, political and economic self-determination of women and all survivors of violence and oppression. Asian Women's Shelter (AWS) was founded in 1988 to address the needs of women, children, transgender and non-binary survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, especially those who are immigrants and refug

ees. They inspire our unrelenting commitment to end violence in our families, communities, and world. We provide comprehensive survivor centered and trauma informed services in over forty languages, including a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter program, transitional and permanent housing program, Arab Women’s Services and Q-RAB Program, Queer Asian Women and Transgender Support Program, Anti-Trafficking Program, and more. At AWS, survivors and their children begin to heal and rebuild their lives. Other AWS initiatives engage our communities to affect positive change: Public Awareness, Grassroots Mobilization, Systems Advocacy & Change and Organizational & Movement Capacity Building. ✨ FROM IGNITE TO ILLUMINATE! ✨

Last year, our community came together to IGNITE change. This year, we’re coming together to ILLUMINATE a future free from violence.

This October, Asian Women’s Shelter is launching ILLUMINATE, our community-led fundraising campaign to power SFAWS’s 38th year of culturally responsive, survivor-centered work. Together, we’re working to raise $250,000 to sustain vital programs and services for survivors.

There are so many ways to shine your light: GIVE, HOST, GATHER, or SHINE. 💜

Today marks a milestone at Asian Women's Shelter

After nearly four decades of unwavering service, today is the final day of our founding advocate, Mayseng Saetern, as a staff member. Since SFAWS first opened its doors in 1988, Mayseng has helped shape not only our programs, but the heart of our organization.

While she may be stepping away from the day-to-day work of the shelter, Mayseng will always be part of the fabric of SFAWS. Her compassion, wisdom, and steadfast commitment to survivors have touched countless lives, and her legacy is woven into the foundation and values that continue to guide our work every day.

In these two clips, Mayseng reflects on the future of SFAWS and shares a powerful reminder that our shelter is more than a building—it’s people, relationships, and community that make it a home.

We will miss Mayseng dearly, but we are so grateful for all she has given over the past 38 years. Please join us in wishing her a joyful and well-deserved retirement. 💜

Stay tuned as we continue celebrating Mayseng and honoring her extraordinary legacy in the weeks ahead.

Our story is about more than one organization—it’s about what’s at stake for survivors across the country.

We’re grateful to The 19th News for telling a holistic, in-depth story about how federal funding cuts and changing funding priorities are impacting culturally specific domestic violence programs like San Francisco Asian Women’s Shelter (SFAWS), and the communities we serve. The story goes beyond the termination of one grant to highlight the holistic care, long-term investment, and continuum of support that allows survivors to thrive—not just manage their immediate crisis needs in a one-off moment.

Survivor-centered, culturally responsive services are essential, and every community deserves access to them.

Through these challenging times, we remain committed to serving those with the greatest needs—and we’re able to continue that work because of a community like you. Your support, partnership, and belief in this work help sustain SFAWS and the survivors we serve.

We invite you to read the article and learn more about what’s at stake for survivor services and the communities who rely on them. https://19thnews.org/2026/07/san-francisco-asian-womens-shelter-domestic-violence-funding/

⚽ As we near the final whistle of the World Cup, we're grateful for the opportunity to lift up our anti-human trafficking work—and the survivors it serves. 💙

Special funding tied to this year's major sporting event allowed Asian Women's Shelter (SFAWS) to expand outreach, including these multilingual awareness ads, one of which is being featured this week as a digital ad in Bay Area transit stations in partnership with San Francisco Collaborative Against Human Trafficking and SFMTA - San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Be sure to tag us if you see it!

That visibility matters. Survivors of trafficking and domestic violence often experience abuse in the shadows, isolated and unsure where to turn. Awareness campaigns like this can become the moment someone recognizes the signs, learns about available resources, or finds the courage to reach out for help.

For the immigrant and limited-English-speaking survivors we serve, that courage is often met with additional barriers. Through our multilingual advocacy and language access work, we help connect survivors with support in their own language, from advocates who understand their experiences.

Thank you to everyone who helped share these messages throughout our community. Together, we can ensure more survivors know: Your safety matters. You don't have to face this alone.

As we wrap up Pride Month and welcome Disability Pride Month, we're reminded that our commitment to LGBTQ+ survivors—and to building more accessible, affirming, and inclusive communities—extends far beyond any single month.

At Asian Women's Shelter (SFAWS), supporting LGBTQ+ survivors means more than providing crisis services. It means creating spaces where q***r and trans survivors can experience joy, connection, advocacy, and belonging—and where staff, volunteers, and survivors walk alongside one another every step of the way.

Our latest reflection looks back on this year's San Francisco Trans March and the moments of celebration, community care, and collective action that made the day so meaningful.

We invite you to read the article and join us in celebrating the resilience, leadership, and strength of the q***r and trans survivor community. 💜🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 [https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/celebrating-q***r-trans-survivor-community-sfaws-86fxc]

On behalf of our Q***r Asian Women and Transgender Support (QAWTS) team and SFAWS staff, we'd like to invite you to join Asian Women's Shelter (SFAWS) at the San Francisco Trans March this Friday.

Each year, thousands of people gather for one of the largest trans-led marches in the world—a powerful celebration of trans joy, resilience, and community.

As one of our QAWTS staff members shared:

"I always find it deeply moving to see social service organizations, grassroots organizers, neighbors, friends, families, and community members come together and say, 'We are here, and we stand with our trans and gender-expansive communities.'

At a time when many trans and gender-expansive people are facing increasing hostility and uncertainty, gathering in community feels especially meaningful. We hope you'll join us in showing up, celebrating, and standing together.

It’s been amazing to see an influx of visitors from around the world in the Bay Area for the World Cup. We invite our visitors and Bay Area community alike to help spread awareness by sharing these multilingual messages and critical resources. Asian Women's Shelter is proud to partner once again with the San Francisco Collaborative Against Human Trafficking to raise awareness about human trafficking and connect community members with critical resources.

You may spot these multilingual awareness ads in transit stations, on buses, and throughout the community this summer. By sharing information about the signs of trafficking and available support services, we can help ensure that survivors know where to turn for help.

If you see these ads while out and about, tag us and help spread the word. Together, we can increase awareness, expand access to resources, and create safer communities for everyone. Thank you to SFMTA - San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency for supporting this effort.

Empowering all through mental health awareness. When we break the silence and stigma towards mental health, we can spread support and foster emotional well-being. 💜💚🎗️
