SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (June 4, 2026) - The San Francisco Police Officers Association will join Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisor Bilal Mahmood, members of the San Francisco Police Department, community leaders and Officer Elia Lewin-Tankel and his family at Noon, Thursday, June 4, for the official unveiling of "Officer Lewin-Tankel Way," a commemorative street designation honoring the officer's courage, sacrifice and dedication to the people of San Francisco.

The ceremony will take place at 301Eddy St. in the Tenderloin, where Officer Lewin-Tankel sustained life-altering injuries while responding to a dangerous call for service on October 18, 2017.

While on bicycle patrol, Officer Lewin-Tankel responded to reports of an armed suspect fleeing police through the Tenderloin. As he arrived on scene, the suspect struck him with a vehicle, leaving him unconscious and critically injured. Officer Lewin-Tankel survived, but was left permanently disabled.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved in April a resolution establishing the commemorative street designation, citing Officer Lewin-Tankel's heroism, dedication to public service, and the lasting sacrifices made by both him and his family.

"Officer Lewin-Tankel demonstrated extraordinary courage in the line of duty and paid an unimaginable price while serving the people of San Francisco," said SFPOA President Louis Wong. "This designation ensures that his sacrifice, and the sacrifices made by his family, will never be forgotten. We are grateful to Mayor Lurie, Supervisor Mahmood, and the Board of Supervisors for recognizing a true hero."

"Today, we honor not only Officer Lewin-Tankel's service, but the enduring example he set for generations of San Francisco police officers. A street name becomes part of a city's map, but true legacy lives in the lives touched, the community protected, and the values passed on to those who follow.

“On behalf of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, I want to thank Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisor Bill Mahmood, Chief Scott, the SFPD command staff, and especially Officer Lewin-Tankel's family for helping preserve that legacy. This dedication ensures that every person who passes this street will be reminded of a police officer who answered the call to serve with courage, professionalism, and commitment to the people of San Francisco.

“Officer Lewin-Tankel's name now has a permanent place in the city he served so faithfully. We are proud to stand with his family and colleagues as we celebrate a life and career that will never be forgotten. We are so lucky and fortunate to have Officer Lewin-Tankel with us here today."

The designation adds the commemorative name "Officer Lewin-Tankel Way" to the 300 block of Eddy Street between Leavenworth and Jones streets.

Department of Elections
City and County of San Francisco
John Arntz, Director

For Immediate Release

SAN FRANCISCO, Monday, June 1, 2026 – The Department of Elections provides information regarding ballot processing and the release of preliminary election results for the June 2, 2026, Election.
I. Election Night Results Reporting
A. The Department will release four preliminary results reports around the following times:
8:45 p.m.
9:45 p.m.
10:45 p.m.
Following the receipt of results from all polling places.
B. The preliminary results reports will include votes from the following sources:
The 8:45 p.m. report will include vote totals from most of the vote-by-mail ballots received and processed prior to Election Day.
The 9:45 p.m. report will add votes cast at polling places to the vote-by-mail ballot totals provided in the first report.
The 10:45 p.m. report will add additional votes cast at polling places which were received after the second report was issued.
The final report of the evening will add any remaining votes cast at polling places which were received after the third report was issued.
C. For the first and fourth preliminary results reports, the Department will apply the ranked-choice voting (RCV) method to the local contests for Board of Supervisors, District 2 and District 4.
These reports will include tables showing round-by-round preliminary results for each contest and will also include summary tables showing the number of votes each candidate received in Round 1 and in the final round.
The second, and third reports will include only first-choice vote totals.
D. All preliminary election results will be posted at sfelections.gov/results.
II. Wednesday, June 3: Estimate of unprocessed ballots received on Election Day.
A. Estimate of remaining ballots
On the morning of June 3, the Department will issue an estimate of the number of ballots received on Election Day that remain to be reviewed and processed. The estimate will be published through a press release and posted on the Department's website.
These ballots will include vote-by-mail ballots returned at polling places or ballot drop boxes on Election Day; provisional ballots cast on Election Day; and vote-by-mail ballots postmarked on or before June 2 and delivered by the United States Postal Service (USPS) on June 2 and June 3.
B. The Department will not issue preliminary results reports on Wednesday, June 3.
The Department will pause ballot processing on the afternoon of June 1, and will not process ballots on June 2.
This pause allows the Department to provide polling places with lists of voters who have already cast ballots, ensuring that voters who appear at a polling place without surrendering their vote-by-mail ballot can be issued a regular ballot.
As a result, the preliminary results reports released on Election Night will represent vote-by-mail ballots processed on or before June 1, and ballots cast at polling places on Election Day.
The Department will resume the processing of ballots on the morning of June 3, and the next preliminary results reports will be issued on Thursday, June 4, reflecting ballots processed on June 3.
III. Canvass Period Results Reporting and Election Certification
Beginning Thursday, June 4, and continuing through Friday, June 12, the Department expects to release updated preliminary election results reports at approximately 4 p.m. each day, except Sunday, June 7.
After June 12, the Department will release additional results updates as ballots are counted and will post notice of the updated reporting schedule on its website.
Under state law, the earliest date the Department may certify the election results is Thursday, June 25.

Officer Elia Lewin-Tankel was assigned to Tenderloin Station in 2017. At the time, he was 32 years old, a highly respected officer, and attending law school. Officer Lewin-Tankel was struck on his police bicycle by Willie Flanigan, who was fleeing officers in a stolen vehicle. Officer Lewin-Tankel suffered severe and permanent brain injuries that changed his life forever.

On June 4 at 12:00 PM, the commemorative street name “Officer Lewin-Tankel Way” will be added to the 300 block of Eddy Street in recognition of Officer Elia Lewin-Tankel’s courage, sacrifice, and dedication to the people of the City and County of San Francisco. We would like to thank Sergeant Michael Cunnie, Mayor Lurie, Supervisor Mahmood, and POA President Louis Wong for their efforts in making this recognition possible.
