Mission Science Workshop is a bilingual community science resource committed to enriching the educational experience of low-income and historically underserved youth. AND in the Excelsior at 4458 Mission Street.

Meet Rosie the long-tailed chinchilla, our newest animal at Mission Science Workshop! Rosie is 4 years old and a bundle of curiosity, energy, and fun. Chinchillas can live up to 20 years and are very social animals. Rosie’s fur is the densest of any land mammal, with over 70 hairs per follicle (humans have just 1–4!). She is nocturnal, loves dust baths, and enjoys special treats like rose petals, chamomile, dandelion, and dried apple.

¡Conoce a Rosie, la chinchilla de cola larga, nuestra nueva mascota en Mission Science Workshop! Rosie tiene 4 años y es un hervidero de curiosidad, energía y diversión. Las chinchillas pueden vivir hasta 20 años y son animales muy sociables. Su pelaje es el más denso de cualquier mamífero terrestre, con más de 70 pelos por folículo (¡los humanos solo tenemos entre 1 y 4!). Es nocturna, le encantan los baños de arena y disfruta de golosinas especiales como pétalos de rosa, manzanilla, diente de león y manzana deshidratada.

Today it was clear how excited our community was to have the Excelsior Science Workshop open during school closures. So many families stopped by to tinker, build different musical instruments, meet our animals, and engage with our specimens and exhibits.
In response, we’ve decided to expand our open community hours this week in case the strike and school closures continue. Please see the attached flyers (English and Spanish) for details, and check our website and social media for the most up-to-date information. As soon as schools reopen, we will return to our normal programming. Thank you all! Si Se Puede!

Hoy quedó claro lo emocionada que estaba nuestra comunidad de que el Taller de Ciencias del Excelsior estuviera abierto durante el cierre de las escuelas. Muchas familias nos visitaron para experimentar, construir diferentes instrumentos musicales, conocer a nuestros animales e interactuar con nuestras muestras y exhibiciones.
En respuesta, hemos decidido ampliar nuestro horario de atención al público esta semana en caso de que continúen la huelga y el cierre de las escuelas. Consulten los folletos adjuntos (en inglés y español) para obtener más detalles y visiten nuestro sitio web y redes sociales para obtener la información más actualizada. Mission Science Workshop stands in solidarity with all of the amazing SFUSD teachers and families.

Next week we are offering extended free drop-in science and tinkering space for our community in case of a strike and school closures.

The Excelsior site will be open and welcoming families to tinker, build, and explore with all of our exhibits, tools, and resources. We will be offering hands-on science projects, tinkering stations, live animals to hold and pet, exhibits to explore, tools to build projects with, and collections of bones, fossils, rocks, and much more.

Since this is a rapidly changing situation, please consult Mission Science Workshop website and social media for updates.

Mission Science Workshop se solidariza con todos los increíbles maestros y familias del Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Francisco (SFUSD).

La próxima semana ofreceremos nuestro taller del Excelsior para actividades científicas y de experimentación para nuestra comunidad, en caso de huelga y cierre de escuelas.

La sede de Excelsior estará abierta y recibirá a las familias para que experimenten, construyan y exploren con todas nuestras exhibiciones, herramientas y recursos. Ofreceremos proyectos científicos prácticos, estaciones de experimentación, animales vivos para observar y acariciar, exhibiciones para explorar, herramientas para construir proyectos y colecciones de huesos, fósiles, rocas y mucho más.

As the year comes to a close, we want to wish everyone a joyful holiday season and all our best wishes for the new year, comunidad! We are so grateful for each and every one of you.

Tomorrow is our last Third Saturday of the year at Excelsior, and then we’ll be closing our workshops for Winter Break. Join us this Saturday from 10:00–3:00 pm at the Excelsior Science Workshop—or we’ll see you in 2026 for even more science fun for all!

Al finalizar el año, queremos desearles unas felices fiestas y los mejores deseos para el nuevo año, ¡comunidad! Estamos profundamente agradecidos con todos ustedes.

Mañana celebramos nuestro último Tercer Sábado del año en Excelsior, y luego cerraremos nuestros talleres durante las vacaciones de invierno. Los esperamos este sábado de 10:00 a 15:00 en el Taller de Ciencias de Excelsior, o nos vemos en 2026 para aún más diversión científica para todos.
