Congratulations to Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis and John Jumper who have been recognized with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their groundbreaking work with AlphaFold 2. The AlphaFold 2 AI model predicted the structures for nearly all known proteins, a fundamental building block of life, transforming a process that would have taken researchers years for each protein into something that takes minutes. Google Deepmind made AlphaFold publicly available and it’s been used by more than 2 million researchers globally, accelerating scientific discovery in areas like vaccines and cancer treatments.

This underscores how critical it is to ensure that leading AI researchers and developers feel comfortable innovating and sharing their models in order for their work to be implemented in ways that benefit humanity. Thank you for preserving AI innovation in CA. This is exactly the kind of groundbreaking research and collaboration that SB 1047 would have discouraged.

The Bay Area Council is happy to report that the 2023 Pacific Summit was in ship-shape last Tuesday, June 20th! This year marked the very first Pacific Summit aboard our new floating HQ, the Klamath. There, attendees heard from a breadth of incredible leaders about everything from the future of our region’s biggest cities to how healthcare will evolve in the coming decades.

This year’s Pacific Summit hosted an incredible selection of speakers, including SF Mayor London Breed, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, and SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. We are so grateful to them and all our other speakers for sharing their time and expertise on a wide range of topics. Through our panels and salons, we were able to facilitate amazing discussions on California politics, health care, the future of AI, the next step forward in DEI, and how to reach net zero emissions.

The Bay Area Council would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all our sponsors of this year’s event, especially our presenting sponsor, Kaiser Permanente. Your support enables all the work we do year-round to advocate for the entire Bay Area and for policies that improve its economy and the lives of its residents.

WETA’s newly converted Gemini class ferries reduce emissions by the boatload! The Bay Area Council joined the Water Emergency Transportation Authority, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, and other transportation leaders from across the on Tuesday (May 23) to celebrate the conversion of these diesel vessels to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent.

“We have a responsibility to give the Bay Area a transportation option that improves air quality and public health in the communities we serve and all of this work is connected to that goal,” said Bay Area Council CEO Jim Wunderman, who also serves as Chair of the WETA Board of Directors.
The Bay Area Council has long been a vocal advocate for expanding and decarbonizing ferry operations around the bay. The Council is excited to see WETA continue to innovate and provide ship-shape green to those crossing the bay.
