It's with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Adela Clara (October 21, 1932 — May 4, 2026). A trailblazing flamenco dancer, teacher, and choreographer, her artistry and vision helped shape the landscape of flamenco in the United States.
Adela founded Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco of San Francisco in 1966, one of the nation’s oldest resident Spanish dance companies and a cornerstone of the Bay Area dance community. Under her leadership, and through extensive touring across the United States, Theatre Flamenco introduced generations of audiences to the passion, beauty, and dramatic power of flamenco and the rich regional traditions of Spanish dance. The company is now spearheaded by Carola Zertuche and continues as the longest running flamenco company in the United States— 60 years and counting!
Beyond the stage, Adela was a devoted teacher and mentor. Through her discipline, creativity, and profound love for the art form, she inspired dancers and helped cultivate a lasting appreciation for Spanish dance in the United States.
Adela Clara, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, at the age of 93. She was a pivotal mentor for FAI's Artistic Director, Marina Elana. Her legacy lives on through the countless artists, students, and audiences whose lives were enriched by her work.
