For decades, the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco has been a symbol of LGBTQ+ activism, joy, and resilience. Home to many of the country’s most influential q***r artists and activists, the Castro helped shape modern LGBTQ+ history, including the election of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the U.S., and the creation of the Pride flag. 🏳️‍🌈

This Pride Month, SFF honors San Francisco's LGBTQ+ history and the ongoing work to ensure LGBTQ+ communities across the Bay Area can live safely, authentically, and with dignity. 🌈

We’re shining a light this Pride Month on the Miss Major Alexander L. Lee TGIJP Black Trans Cultural Center Justice Project (TGIJP), an organization working directly with Black trans people navigating the criminal justice system. They offer essential services to currently and formerly incarcerated individuals and advocate for trans, gender-variant, and intersex individuals, especially those who are Black.

TGIJP is a vital force in the fight for justice, and we’re proud to support their mission to help formerly incarcerated Black trans folks rebuild their lives. Read more about their incredible work:

In light of the growing transphobic oppression, state violence, and a political climate that jeopardizes the lives, rights, and movements of beloved trans individuals, it is crucial that we continue to uplift and honor the work, advocacy, and community solutions led by Trans Black, Indigenous, and P...

SFF celebrates our region’s vibrant immigrant community for Immigrant Heritage Month. Make no mistake - immigrants are 34% of San Francisco’s population, and they are the backbone of our local community and economy. We remain committed to supporting our immigrant neighbors during this time of unprecedented crises and threats.

Californians want leadership that matches the scale of the housing crisis. Our next governor will shape the policies, investments, and partnerships that determine whether we meet the moment or fall short.

Rising rents, displacement, and homelessness are putting pressure on communities everywhere. While there’s no single solution, real progress requires leadership that can work across differences to deliver results. Read SFF CEO Fred Blackwell’s take on the CA Governor’s housing debate, co-sponsored by SFF:

The California Governor’s debate on housing made clear what too many families across the state already know: housing is the central issue. Rising rents, displacement, and homelessness are putting pressure on communities everywhere, and they’re looking for leadership that matches the scale and ur...

Stand Together Bay Area supports immigrant families facing severe hardship through local partners like Faith in Action Bay Area.

In one case, a father was detained by ICE during a routine check-in despite following the required steps in his immigration process. With a U.S. citizen partner and a newborn at home, the family received support for rent, basic income stability, and legal representation while he was detained for nearly four months—helping them stay housed until he was able to return home.

Stand with us to help more families get the support they need: standtogetherbayarea.org

Stand Together Bay Area is a community-funded lifeline for immigrant neighbors facing crisis. This fund has helped keep the safety net from giving way when it mattered most.

No one should have to weather hard times alone. Thanks to grantees Canal Alliance, Faith in Action East Bay, and Refugee & Immigrant Transitions, local immigrant families received emergency financial, rental, and legal assistance.

Read the stories of families supported by the Stand Together Bay Area Fund here:

There is a moment – familiar to too many families in the Bay Area right now – when ordinary life suddenly stops. A landlord posts an eviction notice. The food pantry becomes thin. Sudden changes to one’s citizenship status makes paying off debt impossible. Stand Together Bay Area is a communit...

SFF mourns the loss of Rita Semel, founder and past chair of the San Francisco Interfaith Council.

Rita was instrumental in the early days of SFF and in the creation of SFF’s FAITHS (Foundation Alliance with Interfaith to Heal Society) program, nationally recognized for strengthening the work of faith-based organizations. Through her leadership, compassion, and commitment to community, Rita leaves a lasting legacy in the Bay Area, especially among the communities she served. Rita once shared, “Speak up and you'll find plenty of people who want to join you to speak up. There are people out there who are willing to help. Just make it known what the issue is, and find your allies.” Pictured here is Rita Semel at SFF’s 75th anniversary celebration in 2023 (Photo by Adriana Oyarzun Photography).
