Mid-Market Art Project

Mid-Market Art Project What is an artist's role in the cultural development of a city? How do the arts fuel change and urban renewal?

The Mid-Market Art Project (MMAP) is a collaborative group of graduate students from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) interested in the role of the arts in the process of cultural development, urban renewal, and how art can change idle or vacant spaces. How can an art intervention transform a vacant or idle space? The goal of MMAP is to facilitate a conversation about arts’ interactions with

a neighborhood community that is currently undergoing cultural development. Three chosen artists will display their work on site in the Mid-Market neighborhood in April 2012, be included in a an exhibition at the Diego Rivera Gallery, and be featured in a printed project publication, as well as on the MMAP website. Visit that site to learn more about the project, read our blog, or discover more about our three artist projects with Linda Trunzo, WarmBaby, and NODE (Network of Daily Experience)!

This film, available as numerous youtube videos and on the Prelinger archives page, is dated just days before the great earthquake of 1906. Watching it is like excavating an urban geography, destroyed and all but forgotten.
