WOWSA is an international association dedicated to the organization, promotion and recognition of open water swimmers, events, records, trends, publications, films, podcasts and achievements in the world of marathon swimming, including solo and relay channel crossings, competitive races of all distances, especially the Olympic 10k Marathon Swim, extreme swimming (including ice swimming, winter swimming, stage swimming, and high-altitude swimming), coaching, officiating, and piloting.

We are heartbroken by the death of Mara Flavia Araujo during the swim at IRONMAN Texas at Lake Woodlands.

Our deepest condolences are with her family, her friends, and everyone who shared the water with her.

Open water swimming is built on trust. In time, the lessons from this loss will belong to all of us to carry forward. For now, we hold her memory and sit with her family in their grief.

From Olympic official to race namesake 🏅

The inaugural Sid Cassidy Open Water Weekend honors the man who brought marathon swimming to the Olympics and created the 3K Knockout format now making its U.S. debut.

February 14-15, 2026
📍 Coconut Creek + Boca Raton
Saturday: 1.5K Metric Mile + 3K Knockout (freshwater)
Sunday: 5K Challenge + 1K + 500m (ocean)

This is more than a race. It's the start of a tradition.

Most drownings happen in open water — but most prevention still isn’t built for open water. That gap doesn’t just cost lives. It also makes it harder to grow the sport we love.

That’s why WOWSA is launching the Drowning Prevention Fund.

🌊 Greek open water swimmer Charalampos Taiganidis took on an extraordinary challenge in the waters off Cyprus, covering 132.46 km over 58 hours and 36 minutes swimming from Paphos Port toward Larnaca.

Although the finish remained out of reach, the swim was fully documented and reviewed, and is recorded by WOWSA as a Verified Attempt (DNF).

Respect to Charalampos and his support team for the ambition, endurance, and transparency it takes to take on — and document — a swim of this scale.
