George Zimmerman, wearing a bullet proof vest, walked out of a Florida jail shortly after midnight today and slipped back into hiding where his lawyer says he will likely stay until his trial next year.

Zimmerman was able to leave jail after posting $150,000 bond as he awaits trial on a second degree murder charge for the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Later today, Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee will officially resign, ABC News has learned exclusively. Lee, who had been "temporarily suspended" last month in the wake of the killing, is expected to make it official at 4 p.m.

Zimmerman left the John E. Polk Correctional Facility at the Seminole County Sheriff's Office accompanied by a man ABC News identified as his bail bondsman.

Zimmerman was fitted with an electronic monitoring device prior to release, according to a statement from the sheriff's office. The GPS device, which can give immediate identification of an offender's whereabouts anywhere in the U.S., suggests that the defense's request that he be allowed to wait out the trial out of Florida may have been granted.

The terms of his release require him to report his whereabouts every three days, according to court documents.

Zimmerman was also wearing the bullet proof vest beneath a jacket when he walked out of jail. He wore one in court beneath a dark suit last week.

"We have had serious threats that law enforcement is looking into where they've threatened his life and since we don't know how legitimate they are we have to be concerned about all of them," Zimmerman's lawyer Mark O'Mara told ABC News.

Out of concern for his safety, OMara says that he will waive Zimmerman's appearance at his arraignment May 8. When asked if Zimmerman will be seen in public again anytime soon, O'Mara said, "I don't think so," and addd that Zimmerman may not be seen in public until he testifies.

The lawyer depicted a scenario in which Zimmerman, 28, will be largely in isolation with people monitoring his security.

"One picture on a cell phone could destroy the security that we're trying to set up," O'Mara said.

He said that Zimmerman will require "somebody who can help protect him" and said he will ask the state to pay for the protection.

O'Mara said Zimmerman's family is "hoping to get some assistance from the outside because it's going to be a very expensive proposition" to handle living expenses as well as the cost of security and legal fees.

On Saturday his attorney Mark O'Mara left the jail saying his client may be in jail through the middle of the week, adding, and "The logistics, that's a lot of money to come up with. $150,000 is a lot of collateral. It's not a family of much means, obviously, we all know that from the bond hearing itself, so it's tough. We're still working on it."

At a bond hearing on Friday Judge Kenneth Lester set bail at $150,000. The prosecution had argued that Zimmerman should be denied bail entirely or that it should be set at $1 million.

Zimmerman is being held on charges of second-degree murder for the Feb. 26 shooting of Martin, 17, which could carry a life sentence if he is convicted.

Zimmerman stunned a Florida court Friday by taking the stand and apologizing to the parents of Trayvon Martin, who were sitting in the courtroom during Zimmerman's bond hearing.

"I am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was. I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. I did not know if he was armed or not," Zimmerman said addressing Martin's family directly.

Zimmerman told police the night he shot and killed Martin that he acted in self-defense after Martin punched him and pounced on him. Zimmerman told police that Martin then bashed his head into the concrete sidewalk during the altercation that took place in the tidy middle-class development of the Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, Fla.

New judge will preside over Zimmerman case

The judge in the George Zimmerman case recused herself on Wednesday after the defense sought to have her disqualified because her husband worked with a CNN legal affairs analyst who was approached by the defendant to represent him.

Seminole Circuit Judge Jessica Recksiedler, the Florida judge assigned to the highly publicized case, announced that she had decided to leave because “the cumulative effect of the events and the totality of the circumstances provides a legally sufficient basis for this Court to grant the Motion to Disqualify.”

The case will be taken over by Circuit Judge Kenneth R. Lester Jr.

The next judge in the rotation, John D. Galluzzo, disqualified himself because of a prior business and personal relationship with defense attorney Mark O’Mara, it was announced.

"Even though Judge Recksiedler had to grant the motion for disqualification in this case, she is very capable of presiding over this or any other criminal case and I have complete confidence in Judge Lester as well,” Chief Judge Alan Dickey stated.

Zimmerman, 28, is charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 26 shooting in Sanford, Fla., of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, an African American. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, told police he acted in self-defense.

Special prosecutor Angela B. Corey was appointed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott to take over the investigation and filed the charge last week. In Florida, second-degree murder is typically charged in the event of a death stemming from a fight or confrontation that does not involve premeditation. It can result in a life sentence when a gun is used.

Corey said her investigators believe that Zimmerman had “profiled” the youth.

The Justice Department, meanwhile, is conducting a separate investigation to determine whether Zimmerman should be charged with violating Martin's civil rights.
Judge Recksiedler was appointed to handle the case, but last week she held a hearing in which she explained her husband’s role and said she would consider motions that she recuse herself. Defense attorney O’Mara filed a formal motion have the judge step aside on Monday.

The judge’s husband, Jason Recksiedler, is a partner handling civil law matters for the firm of Mark NeJame, the CNN analyst.

NeJame has said that Zimmerman contacted his firm, seeking representation, but NeJame declined for personal reasons. The Zimmerman camp renewed the request recently, but Nejame had already signed on to be an analyst for CNN, so he again said no. NeJame offered a list of five lawyers, including O’Mara, to Zimmerman.

ALEC, the conservative right-wing group responsible for pushing the controversial ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws in many states says it will stop advocating the law. This action comes after activist groups called for a national boycott of ALEC following the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida.

ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, announced its plan to move away from sticky law enforcement policies, such as Stand Your Ground, and return to its economic roots, according to the NY Times.

As a result of the national boycott, numerous corporate sponsors — including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Kraft foods and McDonald’s — announced they have dropped their financial support of ALEC.

“The issue of a young man being killed and linked to this organization made it much harder for companies to say, ‘Gee, this is a great organization that we want to support,’ ” said David Halperin, a senior fellow for United Republic, a liberal nonprofit group.

“We may never know how many families will be denied justice because of the ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws that continue to put communities in danger,” NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous said on Tuesday.

ALEC’s Public Safety and Elections Committee, which encouraged passage of “Stand Your Ground” laws in Florida and other states, will be shuttered.

Since Trayvon’s death, ALEC has lost the support of corporate sponsors and philanthropic organizations, like the Gates Foundation.

“We hate to see any members leave,” said Kaitlyn Buss, a spokeswoman for ALEC, “and we hope to work with these companies that have had problems again in the future.”

Zimmerman reacts after learning he will not be released on bond

George Zimmerman will remain behind bars for at least another month with no bond. George Zimmerman, 28, appeared in a Seminole County courtroom for his bond hearing April 12th wearing a gray prison issue jumpsuit. He remained calm as the judge read instructions to his attorney Mark O’Mara. After the hearing, O’Mara said bond will be set “in the next few weeks.”

Referring to his client as “indigent,” O’Mara told the media he was not charging Zimmerman a dime for his services. Earlier this week Zimmerman set up a Paypal account on his personal website to receive donations from the public.

Florida State Attorney Angela Corey also attended the hearing for Zimmerman’s bond hearing at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman was charged yesterday with second degree murder in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin who died of a single gunshot wound February 26, 2012.
