It is with great sadness we share the news of Huntly Gordon’s passing at the age of 91. Huntly was the very first supporter of Art & Film, providing lunch for the students at the first Art Saturday in 1993. For 33 years he attended almost every single Art & Film event, and every Film Workshop class, working behind the scenes to make Ronald’s vision possible. He was a board member, a caterer, a fundraiser, a film actor, a taskmaster and cheerleader. In the months since Ronald’s passing, Huntly was ever-present, carrying on that vision.
Most students knew him simply as Ronald’s best friend, but Huntly lived a storied life including many years as a newspaper journalist in the Midwest, a politician in Washington state, a local TV producer and founder of a music label that produced Sylvester. Most iconically, for the last 40 years he served as Pope Dementia the Last, a beloved member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. If Huntly was ever absent from an Art & Film event it was safe to say he was at a Sisters event working tirelessly for the community.
Huntly’s joy for life was infectious. He often shared that he hoped he would go out with a bang. He spent his last night out on the town, partying with dear friends and returning home, radiantly happy, in the wee hours of the morning. We are not sorry for him, only for ourselves knowing how very much we will miss him.
