While researching the history of San Dimas schools, I found a photo of a minstrel show from 1928.

It's an ugly part of our history, and I don't think the right thing to do is leave things like this out of the story just because they're uncomfortable to talk about.

There's a lot of San Dimas history that's fun to share. There's also history that isn't. As I continue researching, I'm committed to sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly, and giving all of it the context it deserves.

For today’s trip into the archives, we’re going all the way back to 1891, when San Dimas’s first school was built at Cataract and Commercial. The school changed, expanded, and was rebuilt over the decades as San Dimas grew, until the property eventually became the Pioneer Park we know today.

We’re lucky to have photographs in the San Dimas Historical Society collection documenting generations of students, teachers, celebrations, and everyday school life on this site.

Do you remember attending school in San Dimas? We’d love to hear which school you went to, and what year!

San Dimas officially turned 66 on August 4! 🎂

But becoming a city wasn’t something that happened overnight. Discussions about incorporation date back to at least 1912, nearly 50 years before residents voted to incorporate in 1960.

We dug into our archives to look back at how San Dimas became a city, and some of the birthday celebrations that have followed over the last 66 years.

Happy birthday, San Dimas!

No historical evidence supports this. But no historical evidence disproves it either 🤷🏻‍♀️

Margie Green, our museum manager, is giving us a quick look at one of the newest additions to the San Dimas Historical Society Museum: an authentic ice box.

It’s one of those everyday objects that reminds you just how much daily life has changed over the last century.

Originally built as the San Dimas Hotel in 1887, it never actually operated as a hotel before becoming the Walker family home. Over the decades, it played an important role in the early life of our community, and today it houses the San Dimas Historical Society Museum.

Several of you asked to learn more about the Walker House, so this video is just the beginning. I’ll be taking you inside the museum in a future post!

I started digging through the San Dimas Historical Society archives looking for old Fourth of July photos and ended up finding a story about our town.

These images from the 1966 parade and the 1976 Bicentennial celebration capture more than just a community tradition. They also preserve a downtown in tradition, familiar landmarks that are still here today, and the many different people and organizations that helped make San Dimas what it is.

One of my favorite parts of sharing these archives is noticing details I didn’t expect to find. I’m curious what you’ll spot.

Were you there! Do you recognize someone in the parade, or notice something we didn’t mention in the video? We’d love to hear your memories in the comments.

Did you know the San Dimas Wagon was installed in 1976 as part of San Dimas’s celebration of America’s Bicentennial?

For nearly fifty years, it’s watched this part of our city change and grow. Around 2010, local treasure Margie Green gave the wagon its current citrus-themed appearance.

Do you remember the wagon before its citrus makeover? Share your memories or old photos in the comments. We’d love to hear your stories.
