When I stepped into a community pool to begin my post-pandemic fitness journey, I had no idea I’d be learning some of the most valuable lessons about relationship-building—and fundraising.

Water aerobics wasn’t graceful water ballet. It was work: resistance noodles, water weights, and a group of fierce women of a certain age who didn’t let up. I was the only man in the class, younger, and—truth be told—barely keeping up.

But I kept showing up.

Over time, they welcomed me in. The turning point? A dodgeball game where someone shouted, “Let’s go, girls!”
And just like that, I knew I belonged.

That moment reminded me of fundraising. Not the ask, not the gala—the relationship.
The showing up. The listening. The shared purpose.

Real fundraising isn’t a splashy campaign—it’s a steady swim.
It’s consistency, trust, and the willingness to get a little uncomfortable (with or without goggles).
