I arrived a bit late

When I walked in, I had the opportunity to sit alone in the room for a few minutes and just stare

The video kept played on a loop

I found myself shedding tears. not only because of what the quilt signifies, but because of the quiet, the stillness surrounding it. This was my first time experiencing any part of the quilt in person, and I think I imagined a crowded room, people standing together reflecting, on their phones taking pictures and videos

Instead, it hung by itself in an empty room until I stepped in...

frst, I felt sad about that. as I sat with it, I realized maybe that feeling became part of the experience

The quilt is such a profound part of our community's history. It represents lives, stories, love, grief, survival, and people who never got the chance to stand in front of it themselves

as a younger millennial, this is how I see it. They were taken from us. our mentors that could have been. their stories that they never got to share. our community lost so much, and we still feel that today

For a few minutes, I got to sit in stillness and witness it, and every emotiona that came with it

I’m sharing this not to ask “why weren’t more people here?” More as a reminder

our history only continues to live on when someone steps into the room and chooses to remember

Heyo family!

The Bears will be hosting a pool party in El Cajon to celebrate the birthday of Alan Bravo , our Mr. Bear San Diego 2026!

Admission is free for those with an active membership to Bears San Diego , and a suggested donation of $10 for non-members

All proceeds from this event will benefit the charities we support through the year:

This year, the Bears have contributed to VIDA, Special Delivery SD, Imperial Court de San Diego , Rainbow Spaces , TFSOS, T4T, ProYecto Trans Latina, Pozabilities, and several other organizations that currently slip my mind.

The Bears have demonstrated strong AND consistent support for our community. I highly recommend that everyone consider becoming an official member to also receive invitations to their private events

They offer a variety of membership options, including a special package for couples and polycules, as well as a financially accessible option
