We’re hosting a community listening session on Black maternal and infant health to hear directly from Black birthing parents, families, caregivers, birth workers and community members across San Diego County at The Block Club from 1-3 p.m. on June 6.

The conversation will help inform our ongoing reporting project exploring experiences, resources and systems connected to maternal and infant health in the region. The event is free to attend, and we encourage community members to register ahead of time to reserve a spot.

This project and listening session are being produced with support from the University of Southern California Center for Health Journalism 2026 California Health Equity Fellowship. Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions ahead of the listening session, and we look forward to seeing you there!

When The All-American Rejects couldn’t play their original venue hours before showtime, an Alpine couple stepped in to host a 600-person house party in their backyard.

The homeowners and attendees shared how the chaotic scramble transformed a residential hillside into an intimate concert venue, and how the band’s DIY tour pushes back against rising ticket prices and the growing corporatization of live music.

✍️ Lauren J. Mapp

The house party was one of the latest in a string of shows protesting Ticketmaster and Live Nation amid soaring ticket prices.

Intergenerational connection was a major theme behind a community event on April 30 commemorating the 51st anniversary of the end of what is commonly known in the United States as the Vietnam War. But the war has different names in other parts of the world.

“The Vietnam War is a somewhat misnomer,” said Catherine Quan Potmesil, a doctoral candidate in history with a focus on Southeast Asian refugee studies at UC San Diego. “This war extended beyond the borders of Vietnam, and while 1975 marked an endpoint for a lot of people, this crisis brought many of us and our families and our communities to places like here.”

Following a presentation on the war by Potmesil, community members spoke on a panel and participated in a discussion-based activity organized by San Diego’s VietVoices and LAOSD at the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans in City Heights.

Mimi Phùng, who organized the event for the second time this year, explained how the series began with a simple question and complex answer: What does April 30, 1975 mean to someone who was born in the U.S. to Vietnamese parents?

Today is the day! Daylight is celebrating its one year birthday — one year of local news created hand-in-hand with communities who don’t always feel seen by local media.

In our first year, we published nearly 300 articles, reached more than 77,000 readers and racked up more than 1.4 million views on Instagram. We launched two series of ways to connect in-person through our “A Light on” community conversations and the Daylight Culture Club. We also received an award from the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium for our immigration coverage, and two awards from the San Diego Press Club for education and multicultural reporting.

And now we’re ready to party. If you haven’t gotten your ticket yet, join us for a celebration tonight at the Global Village Event Hall (run by the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans) at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at a sliding-scale here:

Meet one of our performers for our birthday bash TONIGHT! 🥳

Kumeyaay Boogie is a Kumeyaay bird singing group dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional bird songs, known in the Kumeyaay language as “takook,” which carry the tribe’s creation stories and teachings. Led by performers and cultural educators like Blue Eagle Vigil, the group performs across San Diego County to honor past generations, teach younger community members and ensure Kumeyaay traditions continue to thrive. Through public performances and storytelling, Kumeyaay Boogie shares the message that Kumeyaay people and culture are not only still here, but continuing to grow and evolve for future generations.

Sliding scale tickets available at bit.ly/daylightbday (the link is available in our bio). Tickets can also be purchased at the door while space is available.
