Balboa Park Online Collaborative

Balboa Park Online Collaborative Balboa Park Online Collaborative, Inc. (BPOC) is a nonprofit technology collaboration that connects audiences with art, culture, and science.

Founded in 2008, BPOC serves more 17 cultural organizations in the San Diego area and beyond with technology-related needs including IT support, websites, digital strategy, digitization, and in-gallery interactives. Founded in 2008 to serve 17 organizations in San Diego’s Balboa Park, BPOC helps museums and other art, science, and cultural organizations to make cost-effective, sustainable technolo

gy decisions. BPOC advances technology in the cultural space by enhancing the technology capabilities of our members, including re-launching more than 40 websites on open CMS’s Drupal, WordPress, and Statamic; digitizing more than 300,000 museum objects; providing more than 200 technology-focused trainings and workshops; providing affordable desktop/server support for 12 organizations; and built needed technical infrastructure to support future collaboration in Balboa Park, including a high-speed fiber network and free public WiFi to the estimated 12 million people who visit Balboa Park each year. BPOC also offers internships to low-income high school students like Monarch School students impacted by homelessness and transitioning members of the United States military in a successful IT training program to gain marketable technical skills while augmenting the low-cost IT support to non-profits. Its model has enabled small organizations in San Diego to reach a level of technical sophistication on par with cultural institutions with far greater financial resources. BPOC has expanded to serve more than 30 organizations – BPOC works with clients ranging from volunteer-only institutions such as the Veterans Museum at Balboa Park to mid-size museums such as the San Diego Natural History Museum and The San Diego Museum of Art. Outside of the park, BPOC works with museums in greater San Diego, including Birch Aquarium at Scripps, and beyond, including the Oakland Museum of California, the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and the Saint Louis Art Museum. BPOC has increased the breadth and depth of services provided to meet the changing technology-related needs of cultural organizations.

As part of BPOC's Dreaming of AI series, we have invited Guru Experience to discuss using AI to create personalized cultural engagement. Like many solution providers in the museum service industry, AI is being increasingly integrated into the tools we use to accomplish our work, including Collections Management and Digital Asset Management Systems. We are also seeing examples that augment the visitor experience with ChatGPT-enhanced interpretation. BPOC, in partnership with Guru, is exploring using AI to revolutionize how museums can engage with their audiences. How far can we take AI-driven solutions to create deeper, more meaningful connections between our visitors and museum collections? Join this webinar to see how Guru is using AI to enhance the visitor connection and experience, including "Escape Balboa Park," a joint pilot project to create an AI-driven, personalized, configurable, experiential interaction with museum collections primarily designed to drive physical attendance.

Earlier this week, Balboa Park Online Collaborative hosted another webinar in our ‘Dreaming of’ series with Dreaming of AI with Hidonix. Giovanna Panebianco and Jovan Harmon from Hidonix introduced the Museum Innovation Technology (MIT) platform, an all-in-one solution for museums that includes a content management system, a mobile application for visitors, and a customer relationship management system. They demonstrated the platform's many features and functionality, including AI capabilities for digitization, cataloging, content creation, and personalizing tours, as well as integrations with other technologies like OpenAI's ChatGPT. The discussion also covered the platform's ability to manage and standardize operations across all parts of a museum, from handling changes in artwork location to providing smart parking.
