Another great morning of doing good for great people. This morning we headed down to to meet with another of our newest sponsored Hero Athletes, Gio and Professor Chris Richey , owner of National City Jiu Jitsu Club and himself a veteran.

Gio is a prior service Marine and current Border Patrol agent and his lifetime of dedicated service has left its mark on him, mentally and physically, like it has on many of us who have served in one uniform or another. We’ll be sponsoring Gio for a year of training at National City so that he can experiment the power that jiu jitsu has to offer him, from the mental aspects to the physicality to the amazing community aspect that is found in so many jiu jitsu schools and gyms.

Thanks again to to Professor Chris for nominating Gio and for being a big supporter of what we’re doing

If you like what we’re doing and want to support veteran and first responder mental health, whether you’re a private individual or business, then drop us a dm or email [email protected] or head over to our website www.openmatfoundation.org to see what we do and donate. RED Friday, Remember Everyone Deployed.

Americas military serves globally 7/24/365. RED Friday pays tribute to the bravery of those who prioritize service over self. Open Mat Foundation, founded and operated by veterans, supports veterans and active duty and will recognize the sacrifices the deployed make and of those who didnt come home. We’ll be pairing RED Friday with CrossFit Hero workouts to honor service members and first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice as well as to promote both physical and mental health.

Physical fitness often goes hand in hand with mental fitness and these workouts will strengthen both whether you’re training for the next mission or training for your next jiu jitsu competition. Join us by taking a shot at these workouts and posting your results in the comments below

Our series starts with “Rankel”. U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. John Rankel, 23, of Speedway, Indiana, with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1 Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Pendleton, California, lost his life on June 7, 2010, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan

We’ll be getting together on Saturday 05/16 at Liberty Station to put in some work and take a moment to remember those who gave everything.

We’ll start with a 5k ruck through the historic grounds of the former Naval Training Center. After, we’ll be on the grass for a family-style BBQ with mats out by the bay for open mat rounds.

Completely free event from 0900–1200. Just bring your own food and drinks.

If you believe in the mission and want to support it, donations are always appreciated and go directly toward getting more people on the mats.

Sunday morning snuggle struggle at the best open mat in town
Had some great rolls with some great people this morning

Sat down with from after our roll to discuss how, as a veteran, jiu jitsu has positively impacted both his physical and mental health. Super thankful for this brother and the help and support he has given me along the way getting Open Mat Foundation to where it is today. While we share some similarities in missions with We Defy, it can’t be stressed enough that we are not in competition and what we are trying to do is close the gaps in the safety nets established by our organizations and help as many veterans as possible. Unfortunately there’s still too many falling through those gaps and taking their own lives. We’ll get to zero one day

Enjoy your Sunday. See you on the mats. Stay strong! Stay in the fight!!

Huge shoutout and thank you to Local 145 for their donation to support first responder and veteran mental health. They generously donated $5000 through their community responsibility fund. That’s right, $5k! This donation goes directly towards helping us execute our mission of providing training for veterans and first responders with PTSD; getting them on the mats and out of their heads through an intense and humbling sport and an amazing sense of community. Thank you San Diego City Firefighters!
