Eric Sanders is no stranger to the concept of ‘return on investment,’ having spent more than 30 years as a successful entrepreneur in the manufacturing industry. Still, when the California-based businessman started shifting his focus toward philanthropy, he never imagined it would also help him recover a long-lost passion. The Sanders Family Philanthropic Foundation has supported Global Communities for many years, partnering with communities in the United States and around the world as they work to build healthy, resilient lives. Youth in Sri Lanka face high levels of unemployment because of a lack in job opportunities, which can reinforce negative stereotypes. Our SCORE program is working to support economic resilience through Increased Livelihoods in Sri Lanka by:
- promoting youth leadership
- creating new opportunities for youth entrepreneurs
- strengthening women's business skills & resources.

Last fall, we received a grant from the San Diego Foundation to ensure families are able to access the 2021 Child Tax Credit (CTC). The CTC reduced child poverty by roughly 30%!

We saw that families who most need the Child Tax Credit were not receiving it, either because their incomes are too low to meet the tax filing requirement, or because parents do not taxpayer ID (ITIN) numbers. We collaborated with local partner MAAC to host an ITIN application support event, resulting in families receiving more than $116,000 in tax credits that they would not otherwise get. In addition to being able to use these funds for essential family needs, these families are now able to formally engage in banking to safeguard their money and to find legitimate sources of work while their immigration paperwork is processed.

Thank you San Diego Foundation and MAAC for your partnership to make this happen!

Before 2021, low income families received a limited portion of the Child Tax Credit as a tax refund since benefits were concentrated among middle income families. Since the credit became fully available in 2021, thousands of low-income families have been able to receive the same benefits as those received by middle-income families and it's had astounding impact, keeping 3 million children out of poverty, reducing food insecurity and improving overall health. If you have not claimed your Child Tax Credit yet, you can still claim it at getctc.org/en
