The Bird School Project

The Bird School Project The California-based Bird School Project aims to empower young people to explore the natural areas of their hometowns through birding and natural history

The Bird School Project (BSP) is an idea created by Kevin Condon and Darrow Feldstein--two environmental educators and graduates of UC Santa Cruz with degrees in environmental studies. Our goal is to bike from the California-Oregon border south along the California coast to San Diego during the fall of 2014 (October-December). Along the way, we hope to visit as many schools as possible in order to

provide bird-related education to students along the coast. Our mission is to empower young people to explore the natural areas and organisms of their hometowns in order to create a more ecologically literate population.

Happy World Environmental Education Day! 🌎

Bird School Project got to celebrate through programs: both a field trip and a school birding lesson.

In 2025, BSP spent time outside with over 7000 students!!! We are proud our binoculars/monoculars get a lots of use and to have journals full of observations.

Thanks to our instructor team, the teachers and students who spend their time with us, our partners on projects, and everyone who values environmental education. Together we can steward a better future. đź’š

There is still time to contribute to Bird School Project through Santa Cruz Gives! You can help us start 2026 ready to bring binoculars and nature journaling experiences to students throughout the area.
Donations help us reach more schools, maintain materials like optics and field guides, train instructors and more. A little goes a long way and we at BSP are so grateful to everyone who helps support our vision of inspiring love, stewardship and study of the environment.

Bird School Project and the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History have been making connections on the coast with students this year. An estimated 2,450 students have spent time with us during 2025 at the beach exploring the environment.
Many thanks to our partners in the project and SCESD.

We are deeply saddened to share the heartbreaking news that Ethan RodrĂguez, a student we had the privilege of working with in our Afterschool Nature Classes and Community Nature Club, has passed away. Ethan was a young person with so much life ahead of him, and we are grateful for the time we were able to share with him through our programs.

The photos shared here are Ethan during the Big Sur campout last spring and the VWS Teen Program camping at Arroyo Seco — moments that reflect the spirit and presence he brought to the programs. His loss is profoundly felt by our team, especially Fern, who worked closely with him.

Our hearts are also with Ethan’s mom, who was actively involved in the Community Nature Club they participated in. We hope our community can hold Ethan’s loved ones with compassion, care, and respect during this incredibly difficult time.

With the family’s consent, we are sharing information for those who would like to support with funeral expenses. Any contribution, of any amount, is deeply appreciated and goes directly to the family.

Donations can be sent to JEANETTE RODRIGUEZ via Zelle at (831) 682-2773.

Please keep Ethan’s family in your thoughts, and thank you for holding space for this loss within our community.

Did you know this is the 11th year of Bird School Project visiting classrooms around the Monterey Bay Area? Through that decade the organization has grown and changed, but the mission has stayed the same: inspire and equip students and teachers to love, study and steward their local environment through outdoor learning.

You can help make a difference and help support that mission before the year ends by donating to Bird School Project during the Santa Cruz Gives campaign! For less than $10, you can support one student through all 3 BSP lessons. Check out santacruzgives.org/nonprofit/birdschoolproject to donate!

Enjoy checking out our top birds seen (by pure number of individuals and the frequency they showed up during programs) for both with our school programs and through the Festival of Birds!
Here’s to celebrating 2025 and the birds you can see right in your neighborhood/schoolyard.

💚 Before the day ends, here’s a Giving Tuesday invitation.

Birding is free — but giving students access to great instructors, field journals, binoculars, and the confidence to actually try it… that’s where your support comes in.

If you’re giving today, please consider supporting our Santa Cruz Gives campaign, which helps fund outdoor learning programs for Santa Cruz County students.

đź’š $7.50 = 1 student
đź’š $75 = 10 students
đź’š $300 = a full class

Link in bio to give.

Thank you for helping kids learn outside.
