The Bird School Project

The California-based Bird School Project aims to empower young people to explore the natural areas of their hometowns through birding and natural history

The Bird School Project (BSP) is an idea created by Kevin Condon and Darrow Feldstein--two environmental educators and graduates of UC Santa Cruz with degrees in environmental studies. Our goal is to bike from the California-Oregon border south along the California coast to San Diego during the fall of 2014 (October-December). Along the way, we hope to visit as many schools as possible in order to

provide bird-related education to students along the coast. Our mission is to empower young people to explore the natural areas and organisms of their hometowns in order to create a more ecologically literate population.

Join BSP and MPRPD this Sunday at Locke Paddon for a beginner bird walk!
We will meet by the library and explore the birds around the shrubs and trees, then make our way along the pond.
We welcome all birding experience levels and have some binoculars to borrow. RSVP through the MPRPD LGO site. We hope to see you there!

Come join Bird School Project and Monterey Waterkeeper for a bird walk at Gabilan Creek!

Tucked between the high school and residential area, this Salinas creek is a hub for birds, and we want to explore what species we can find! With the bilingual BSP instructor and Monterey Waterkeeper leader, help us celebrate the importance of healthy habitats for our watersheds and feathered friends.

It’s National Nonprofit Day!
While there is truly a day for everything, we still think it is worth celebrating how much our small Nonprofit is able to accomplish over the last 11 years.

Bird School Project has worked connecting students at over 60 schools to the nature of their schoolyards, and we hope to keep growing this impact throughout Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.

Help us do so by donating on our website, signing up for our newsletter, coming to the Festival of Birds, and continuing to support programs at your schools!

🎉 Tickets for the 2026 Monterey Bay Festival of Birds go live this Friday, August 1!

We’re counting down the days and can’t wait to welcome you back for another weekend of birding, learning, art, and community.

To kick things off, we’re excited to unveil this year’s festival artwork by local artist Noelle Proud, featuring this year’s festival bird, the Brandt’s Cormorant! We’re grateful to Noelle for creating such a beautiful piece to represent this year’s festival.

Do you have bird knowledge to share? Help us spread the love for the birds and nature of the Monterey Bay Area by leading for the Festival of Birds! If you or someone you know has favorite location or habitat, a bird specialty, nature based activity or just likes introducing more people to the birding, consider leading for the MBFOB. We welcome specific ideas for trips and workshops, or just an an enthusiasm to share.

Watsonville Earth Week starts this week and we are celebrating this weekend with friends from the Watsonville Nature Center and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation!! Join us for a bilingual bird walk, clean up and craft activity at Pinto Lake City Park

Bird School Project is excited to be out in community this spring! You can find us at a number of events throughout the Monterey Bay over the next month. Come say hello at our tables and join us on beginner and bilingual bird walks. We can’t wait to see you there!

Happy World Environmental Education Day! 🌎

Bird School Project got to celebrate through programs: both a field trip and a school birding lesson.

In 2025, BSP spent time outside with over 7000 students!!! We are proud our binoculars/monoculars get a lots of use and to have journals full of observations.

Thanks to our instructor team, the teachers and students who spend their time with us, our partners on projects, and everyone who values environmental education. Together we can steward a better future. 💚

There is still time to contribute to Bird School Project through Santa Cruz Gives! You can help us start 2026 ready to bring binoculars and nature journaling experiences to students throughout the area.
Donations help us reach more schools, maintain materials like optics and field guides, train instructors and more. A little goes a long way and we at BSP are so grateful to everyone who helps support our vision of inspiring love, stewardship and study of the environment.

Bird School Project and the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History have been making connections on the coast with students this year. An estimated 2,450 students have spent time with us during 2025 at the beach exploring the environment.
